I'll probabably do hand written this first test just to be sure, and then see about the future tests. 9/22/2005 1:02:04 PM |

Is it me, or was that test the most horrendous excuse of a thing you've ever seen?
I was seething by the time I walked out of there, considering I've been to his classes, made decent grades so far, and studied for about 3 hours for this thing
At least ask us questions in the same manner you've TAUGHT them in the course, dammit 9/23/2005 1:17:50 PM |

I love how our 20 question test turned into a 16 question test because he doesn't know what he is doing. Now each question is worth like 7 points. Idiot! 9/23/2005 1:19:52 PM |
SouthPaW12 All American 10141 Posts user info edit post |
Seething doesn't begin to explain it. I was totally furious.
My cheat sheet that took HOURS to HAND WRITE was absolutly WORTHLESS. Not one time did I refer to anything on that sheet...why? Because nothing on that test was what he told us to focus on. I'll be damned if you can find the word "Poisson Variable" on his "study guide". Yet there was a question that required that knowledge.
I studied my brain off for that test and didn't talk to one person who felt the least bit satisfied/comfortable w/ the results. First off, the study guide was BS and unrealated to the real questions he'd ask on the test (remember he told us REMEMBER THE "ROLL THE DICE BETTING EXAMPLE!!!", and it was NOWHERE to be found. Second, it was faulty (surprised? ) Third, it was too long for 50 minutes, at least when I'm totally clueless on over half the material.
That was the worst excuse for a test I've ever seen, w/ last week's BUS 340 (Masemore) pulling a close 2nd.
EDIT: Also, I've attended EVERY SINGLE class, made 100's on the WebAssigns/lab WS, and felt comfortable w/ everything he mentioned on the study guide. I can't wait to pwn this guy on the end of semester reviews

Does anyone think they passed the test? I think even w/ the curve, I'll do bad.
If anyone knows the answer to the poisson question, please post it. 9/23/2005 2:26:15 PM |
SouthPaW12 All American 10141 Posts user info edit post |
^ I don't think I'll do well even after the curve...honestly, I may still fail it.
I put the "airplane" answer for 2 reasons: Foremost, he LOVES to re-use examples (i.e.; flipping coins, betting at a casino, etc.), and I remember that plane problem from WebAssign. Second, it seemed MORE random than the other two, which each had specific TIME constraints (one was this morning, one was 1994, the plane had no time limits).
It is utterly pathetic that we have to resort to those methods of thinking to guess at an answer since he complete forgot to mention that a poisson Q would be on there.
EDIT: Another thing I thought of: In a Statistics class in which right and wrong answer are decided by numbers as small as .1 or lower, who else feels that "None of the Above" should NOT be an option? He put that on like every computational problem and it totally farked me over.

ok, i have a question
is there anything we can do about the way he teaches and tests? I've only missed 1 class, have a 92 average on the webassigns, and have been to every lab. I'm pretty positive I failed that test, considering I guessed on over 8 questions. There is something inherently wrong when my chinese TA who I can barely understand can explain problems more clearly in one 50 min session than our TEACHER can.
Is there any way to go to a departmental head about this? Because it is NOT right that I pay $1,000 for a course that teaches me nothing, and if his tests remain like this, I WILL fail.
How exactly do you go about complaining about something like this to a departmental head, and will it even get us anywhere? 9/23/2005 2:45:42 PM |
SouthPaW12 All American 10141 Posts user info edit post |
^ Not sure, but something needs to be done.
Honestly, he's a smart guy. He just can't teach worth shit. I'd suggest we start at the root of the problem rather than trying to screw up his position/income. We should all email him SANE emails about what we found wrong w/ his test, study guide/misleading, etc.
I've emailed him before and he takes things into consideration. I'd say 15+ emails would definitely change something. I'm down for emailing him, anyone else? 9/23/2005 2:52:08 PM |
jo7304 New Recruit 46 Posts user info edit post |
^ I am wondering the SAME thing. I guessed on at least 7 questions and that's pretty sad considering there were only 16 questions on the exam. He doesn't seem like he wants to speak to the students when we come up to him for questions.
My note sheet was null and void as soon as he passed out the tests. I am 100% on all webassigns and labs, too.

yeah, i suppose it would be nicer to let him know we're dissatisfied
But seriously, I think I will email him mainly about how he teaches using sigma and signs and stuff that he never explains but assumes we know. If he taught with real examples and explained and tested from them, I think I'd do fine.
And I will also let him know that his study guide was very misleading. I studied very hard for this test, and I felt pretty confident of the material based on problems we did. It was a shock to read the questions on the test and on some, have no clue what they were even asking ( N(10,4) for example...Why couldn't he just say "mean of 10, SD of 4"??)
But I really think we need some more emails from students to make a difference. How do you recommend getting other students to write them?
(P.S...maybe we should just give him a link of all the Study Hall threads about his class? ) 9/23/2005 2:59:23 PM |

if you honestly feel like you arent going to do well in the class
now is the time to use the "drop class" option in TRACS or just switch to pass/fail and retake the course next semester.
This is my fifth year here and if theres one thing i know its this:
NC State does not give a fuck about you.
just drop the class and hope to get Reiland next time... honestly you shoudl all just be glad you are in the business school. This class is cake compared to the shit that people in engineering/math/etc majors have to do...
Im not saying i dont feel your pain on having a class that causes you difficulty, just trying to put things in perspective a little 9/23/2005 3:10:55 PM |

Right-on. I didn't take the time to learn what a "Research One" instutition was 'til I came here, and now I realize how much it sucks. Research (and money) first, students = dead last.
And yeah, these BUS courses are very easy compared to EE and such, but I still feel like I deserve a decent teacher. This intro stats stuff isn't HARD, it just isn't explained in class at all.9/23/2005 3:32:23 PM |

^^ yeah im not disagreeing with you. Everyone deserves competent and fair teachers.
However, NC State is notorious for not providing that.
NC State is a terrible school but if you're like me its too late to do anything about that. Just look out for your interests and try to manipulate the system the best you can...
Just tell your friends, family, & loved ones to avoid this school at all costs and when the alumni board comes asking for donations tell them to fuck off. 9/23/2005 4:29:42 PM |

Ok, I competely agree with NC State sucking
Here's my story:
I'm an out-of-state student (I realize that was my choice) who has been living here for over 4 years now. For the past 3 years I have held 2 different jobs in NC, each averaging 30 hours a week. For 3 years, I have lived in an apartment that I pay for. For three years I have had a NC drivers license, registered and insured my car in NC, and have paid state taxes. I have registered and voted in NC.
I have applied for in-state tuition 4 times, and 4 times been rejected. They say I havent "proven that I intend to live here after I finish school". After talking to a residency lawyer who I hoped would help me get in-state tuition, he had some advice.
He said that NC State is one of the worst schools in NC in terms of ripping students off. He said that with my qualifications, most any other school in NC would qualify me as in-state. He said that all other state funded institutions have to give PROOF as to why they make the decisions they make, but for some reasons universities are EXEMPT from that rule, and NC state residency committee makes full use of that exemption.
He also said to try one more time, and if they still said no, to tell them (and these are his exact words) "Don't you assholes dare to come ask me for money after I graduate, because all my money went to paying my tuition".
...And so no, dropping this course isnt really an option considering I still have to pay for it, and for me, that equals to $1200 down the drain 9/23/2005 5:51:43 PM |

I forgot to mention that last year I had started to take this course with Reiland, and near November I had to withdraw the semester because of family issues.
When I had it with Reiland, I UNDERSTOOD the material. I made an A and a B on the tests I took.
Now here I am "learning" the same stuff, and I have to guess on over 1/2 a test?
That's just wrong ...give me back Reiland!!!!!!!!!! 9/23/2005 6:47:19 PM |

what are we putting in our e-mails? Because I understand that this material may just be difficult... but part of the reason, to me, that we all did so poorly is because of his teaching style (or lack of it). How do we say that nicely? 9/25/2005 11:31:22 AM |
SouthPaW12 All American 10141 Posts user info edit post |
These are the high-points of my email:
1) The study guide wasn't respresentative of the test, and many questions on the test weren't mentioned on the study guide. We were misled in some areas.
2) "None of the above" was definitely troublesome. With only ~45 minutes to take a test, it forced me to think "Hmmm, do I have this right, or did I really do it wrong?" I didn't have ample time to re-do 6 problems just to ensure the answer was "D" in a class where the difference between right and wrong can be microscopic.
3) I requested that in class he give us more than just formulas with symbols and explaining "how they work". I suggested he use that overhead in Nelson to physically write out some problems and complete them in front of the class from start to finish, so we'll see possible snags along the way and can ask questions. I stated that just knowing the formulas did not help me compute the "real-world" problems proposed on the test, as I didn't know how to get from Point "a" to point "z".
Feel free to add other issues as well, as I know there's plenty.

WTF this guy is a total loser.
Everyone of those "points" are addressing the email I sent (and possibly others), but in reality nothing is accomplished. I got 11/16 in WebAssign, and I'm assuming that's AFTER the curve which is rediculous when I'm making As/Bs in other classes harder than this.
"Generally good", bull freakin' crap. Good is an opinion douchebag. And he esentially said that even though our sheets were worthless, that was fine. No, that's not fine. What he intentionally did was completely mislead us into studying stuff we wouldn't need to know and into NOT studying stuff we would need to know. This isn't funny, it's not testing our smarts, it's stupid and a waste of time.
I say keep sending emails and DEFINITELY speak up in class when he attempts to brush over these slides. I have found this guy couldn't care LESS about this class. He's doing a post-doc (and I'm assuming research for NCSU getting paid VERY well) and this little teaching stint is not paying him nearly as much, thus he cares much less (like most teachers here, sad to say). 9/25/2005 5:33:55 PM |

So when he says he'll have more "show your work problems" he obviously means he'll put short answer problems on there. this is just getting worse
even if he shows examples in class, if these examples aren't like the questions he'll give us on the exams, it won't even help 9/25/2005 5:54:27 PM |
