Just beat #3 UMD 1-0 at home (almost nobody showed up)
Tied then #2 UNC 2-2 at SAS stadium
Beat then #7 St. Johns 2-1 in Durham

'Pack is 2-2-1 against top 25 teams, 2-1-1 against top 10 teams.

I know they've gotten grief, especially Tarantini, but when will people sit up and take notice that these guys are actually getting a helluvalot better than they were 4 or 5 years ago?

I started to make this thread earlier, then I went to lunch.

Look for the soccer team to drop off again next year after the (what is it, 7?) starting seniors peace out.

Don't be mistaken, it isn't Tarantini that has these boys playing well, it is due to their own determination.

Yes they may have beaten UMD & SJU, but they also have lost to Old dominion & Fairfield.

A few good games in one season, following many terrible seasons is hardly reason to get respect.

I love George Tarantini, simply because he is never ever EVER ever complacent during a game.

Constantly yelling, huffing stomping up and down the sideline...but also encouraging all the time.

My favorite Tarantini in-game quote:

"Rami! Rami! Why you walking?! If you walk, we lose!"

ODU is always good and is ranked. Fairfield is no slouch either.

For those dogging on having a few big wins, look back to a few years ago when we were 0-ACC and would've gotten a run from the Broughton HS Women's team.

TypeA why do you say it's not Tarantini's doing that they're playing better?

vinylbandit My fave statment was to a Technician writer just after a loss (not taped, went something like): "Jack: I'm f*cking sorry you have to cover such a f*cking horrible team. What do you want to know?"

My strangeest moment was seeing him at Marshall's. He recognized me, asked if I knew what happened during the UNC game that afternoon, and then said, "Hmm.. They're good. I need underwear." And walked off to the men's underwear section.

2nd to that was him dropping his clipboard and walking toward the WFU coach taunting, "Are you talking to me? EH?? Are *you* talking to *me*? I'll kick your ass!" HA! It's funny b/c it's Tarantini.

Now... Soccer schedule.. let's see here... I know it's on a site somewhere... on the internet... oh damn, what's it called.. "Go" something go... go wolf... no no, that's not it:

http://gopack.collegesports.com/sports/m-soccer/sched/ncst-m-soccer-sched.html

I hope when they get the soccer teams back on campus (Derr) they'll get more turnout. The fact that either team fields a group of competitive athletes is amazing when comparing what we have as facilities compared to others. We don't even have real bathrooms at Method Road.

Games listed on the schedule as "Raleigh, NC" are held at Method Road Soccer "Complex" (talk about an overstatement) and games listed as "Raleigh, NC (@SAS)" are at the SAS Soccer Park.

If you haven't ever been to a soccer game, I highly recommend going and actually paying attention to what's going on. Tarantini is a nutjob, but he's fun to watch coach. The players want to win, even if they do lose to lesser teams than they should. And go also to see what the teams who aren't football / basketball get to deal with as facilities. The old Carter Finley was a palace compared to what the soccer team has. Their "locker room" is a tent with sides. The press box looks more like a storage shed on blocks. The bathrooms literally are portable, it's a porta-john on wheels.

I remember going to soccer games for SWPC points that we'd lose 4-0, we've come a long ways in a few years.

because everyone at NC State is convinced that the coaches play absolutly no part in a programs success.

When a team does well it's their players (ie. Philip Rivers and Aaron King), but when I team does bad the blame shifts from the players to the coaches... it's a very interesting phenomenon

V tutored him for his citizenship test, if you need a frame of reference.

As for recruiting, he doesn't need to. He just calls up his boys down in SA and says "send me a couple of the decent ones."

#17... holy crap. That just blows my mind. Compared to watching them get beaten by teams like Middle Creek Elementary school back in the day.. Quite proud of them... quite proud indeed.

i need to go sometime. i reallly wanted to go to charlotte but im too busy. i grew up a HUGE charlotte 49ers soccer fan. going to every single home game for about 6 years straight as well as away games in va, sc, and ga and watched em go from not that great to one of the best teams in teh nation. it was good. awesome crowds. almost always packed out stadium tons of noise.

i miss it

Quote :
"Fresh off a weekend shutout of No. 3 Maryland, the NC State men's soccer team has appeared in the national rankings for the first time since the last week of the regular season in 1997. NC State checks in at No. 16 in Soccer America's Poll. NC State stands at 5-3-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in ACC play. Much of the Pack's success is due in large part to its 2-1-1 record so far this season against top-10 opponent. NC State will be looking for its third straight win when Charlotte comes to town Wednesday night for a 7:00 p.m. match at SAS Soccer Park. "

WolfMiami they are supposed to start work on the track, but I don't know if that's actually scheduled or not. At the beginning of last season, I'd heard work would begin at the end of the season. Now I'm hearing it will begin at the end of this season. Regardless, that'd be really great to have soccer on campus. Not many people show up for games when they have to get on the bus and go to Method, or drive. I'd like to hope getting the field on campus would improve that as you could just walk over to Derr Track / Field and watch the games. The few times they've played games next to Lee Hall, they had a decent walk-up turnout.

packgrad, what are they doing with the old football practice fields behind the track. This summer I saw some construction going on over there and I was under the impression they were putting a soccer field in there, guess I am wrong. If so, does anyone know what they are doing with that land?

wasn't it a couple of years ago that one of the soccer players got mad at members of the student wolfpack club? if i recall correctly, the swc people had come to the game and had sat there doing homework or whatever and not cheering at all. then the game ended and they started to file out and the dude came over and said something to the effect of "that's right -- hurry up and leave -- we wouldn't want you to be late to go get your basketball tickets..." there was a big stink made about it afterwards but he was basically right about why most of those people were there...

It wasn't that they were doing homework, just that they were leaving at a crucial point in the game. The crowd had been (relatively speaking) decent up to that point.

Anyway, I won't be able to make the game tonight as I'll be grilling out with my brother's family.
