^^The Stones would never even have started writing their own songs if not for the Beatles.
And The Who rock soooo much harder than the Stones, anyway.
It's pointless to argue about this, though. The Beatles fucking rock. If you don't understand that, your loss. 9/28/2005 9:27:32 AM |

To start with the obvious, they were the greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century. Moreover, they were among the few artists of any discipline that were simultaneously the best at what they did and the most popular at what they did.

It's personal preference.
I pulled out my copy of Hard Day's Night yesterday and popped it into the CD player. Still love it as much as the first time I listened to it. The same goes for all of their albums.9/28/2005 12:54:32 PM |

the beatles are hands down my favorite band ever
at least 90% of the elitist music i listen to probably wouldnt exist without help from the beatles
i understand that a lot of people dont see this connection, dont like the music, or simply associate the beatles with their early 60's material and the original visits to the states
The onlsaught of brilliant records started in 1965 with the release of Rubber Soul. The following seven albums were original and brilliant and influential as anything ever released
i used to be able to argue the stones-beatles thing until my tongue froze up, but now i realize that regardless of their importance to everything that is good about music today, some people still don't dig them. and thats fine 9/28/2005 5:17:58 PM |

Quote : | "I vaguely remember my schooldays. They were what was going on in the background while I was trying to listen to the Beatles.
...
I didn't know it was art then, of course. I only knew that the Beatles were the most exciting thing in the universe. It wasn't always an easy view to live with. First you had to fight the Stones fans, which was tricky because they fought dirty and had their knuckles nearer the ground.
...
I sang in the school choir and knew how to listen for harmony and counterpoint, and it was clear to me that the Beatles were something extraordinarily clever. It bewildered me that no one else could hear it: impossible harmonies and part playing you had never heard in pop songs before. The Beatles were obviously just putting all this stuff in for some secret fun of their own, and it seemed exciting to me that people could have fun in that way.
The next exciting thing was that they kept on losing me. They would bring out a new album and for a few listenings it would leave me cold and confused. Then gradually it would begin to unravel itself in my mind. I would realize that the reason I was confused was that I was listening to Something that was simply unlike anything that anybody had done before. " |
-Douglas Adams
I like the Beatles stuff, but I got a little burned out on them after a while. There's too much good music coming out right now that I want to listen to.
However, if you don't know where music's been, it's hard to fully appreciate where it is now.
Even if you don't like them, chances are that somebody who makes music you do enjoy does.

Dave, how can you prove they are talented? There is no way to prove talent, it is merely someone's opinion. So you should give it up. Dont give me any bullcrap about music theory either. Any band that has someone in it that would marry Yoko Ono has to be crazy. 9/29/2005 1:19:11 PM |

There are plenty of things the Beatles did that had never been done before.
I could point out things Harrison did on lead guitar that no one in the rock world had done before (such as the hybrid-picked turnaround riff in "Help").
I could point out the fact that their chord progressions were more complex than anything in the contemporary pop/rock world, and are still more complex than the vast majority of pop/rock.
I could point out things that Lennon and McCartney did in songwriting that no one in the rock world had done before (such as the merging of two songs with the orchestral interludes that became "A Day in the Life").
I could point out that they were one of the first rock bands to record acoustic instruments, rather than just using amps to mask bad playing ("And I Love Her").
I could point out that they were one of the first rock bands to write material that was more than trite, sappy love songs ("Paperback Writer").
I could point out that they made incredible use of vocal and instrumental harmony.
And I could point out plenty of other things that they started, too, but if your mind's already made up, it wouldn't matter anyway. 9/29/2005 1:30:43 PM |

I could point out that myself and many others still think they suck. Furthermore, all of what you said may be true, however that does not negate the fact that when you say they are great it is merely an opinion. I am sure that a band could posses all of the traits you just listed and still suck balls. 9/29/2005 1:37:04 PM |
