researching for a new pci-e video card... was thinking either a 6800gt or a x800xl but not trying to break the bank this time around. at least 256mb ram would be nice

and i'm upgrading from an old system with a gf4ti4400 w/128mb ram


any suggestions

I had an x800XL 256, but it had some problems and had to be sent back. Before it went haywire, it was frigging sweet. But newegg refunded everything, paid shipping costs for me to send back, gave me a $10 credit on a new card since the one I got was out of stock....so I'm getting my x800xl 512 tomorrow. cost of that one is about 350 bucks. It's got the 16 pixel pipeline instead of the 12 found on most cards. as far as bang for the buck, it can't be beat

What would you all recommend for a PCIe card in the $150 or lower range?

At the moment, I'm wavering between a 6600GT 128MB, or a 6600 256MB...

get a 6800, (not the GT) its around the same price and has more pipelines, making it faster than the 6600GT's even with a clockspeed disadvantage.


i have a 6600GT, still a good card though.

^^The plain 6800s I'm seeing start at around $190-$200, which is a little more than I want to spend.

I may end up talking myself into it, but I'm still looking around.

The more I look through benchmarks, the more I'm leaning toward the 6600GT. However, I'm now also considering the X700Pro or X800GT...

It's so hard to determine what'll give you the most value for the price. I can get a 256MB 6600 for under $100. Add $20, I can get an X800GT. $20 more, I can get a 6600GT. $50 over that, I can get a 6800.

So difficult to draw a line...

I think I'm going to hold out a couple of months. Since ATI is (supposedly) releasing the X1600 at the end of November, and there are rumors that nVidia's going to drop a lower-priced 7 series on the market, I think it'd be worthwhile.

If nothing else, the prices on the current cards might drop.

the new x series ati cards are all basically equivalent to the existing nvidia line. the 7800 is still the fastest out there.

^^Yeah, based on the benchmarks I've seen, the X1000 series isn't particularly impressive.

The benefit would be that nVidia prices might drop to beat them out.

So I ended up changing my mind.

Refurb Leadtek 6800GT (widely reported to be OCable to Ultra-level benchmarks) is on the way.
