I have seen a fried CPU before but this one is just weird. I thought that I would run it by everyine andn see if anybody has seen anything like it before.
On the top of the CPU, you have the actual processor in the middle, mounted in the ceramic. I have seen the processor fry, but I have a scorched mark in the ceramic. It is far enough away that it is not burnoff of the processor itself and the processor looks fine. I would say that the mark is about 1 cm long. I tried it in a couple of motherboards and the CPU does not appear to be working ..... but I just never imagined a CPU can fry in this way.
It was an AMD Athlon 1700 that was never overclocked. The heatsink appears to be working fine also. 10/4/2005 11:41:05 PM |

The CPU does not smell. It just has the scorched mark. 10/5/2005 12:52:57 AM |

what does a heatsink look like when it's working as opposed to when it's not working?

if there's a scorch mark on the ceramic, it's gone. there's a lot of circuitry running through that area. 10/5/2005 9:43:58 AM |
