maybe because Huston Street played the rest of the season in A, AA, and AAA after being drafted instead of straight to the bigs like Devine. Plus he also had the advantage of going to Instructional league and a full Spring Training unlike Devine. So I don't see anything bad about Devine getting rocked in a few of his big league appearances while be 2 months removed from college ball.

you tried to make a comparison to huston street, who had way more experience before making his big league debut compared to devine. having had the chance to see joey the lone 2 days he stopped throught the richmond braves clubhouse en route to atlanta i'd put money on him turning into a huston street or chad cordero type player. it was still very impressive for him to make the jump in the same season he got drafted regardless of the braves bullpen situation. put it this way, he impressed some of the other braves minor leaguers on his way.

Add to that Roberto Alomar, Mo Vaughn, Rodger Cedeno, etc. There are others, but I can't think of them. That place is definitely death to some hitters.

The Mets did do well signing Pedro though and Wright should be MVP material soon. Still it's the Braves division until someone knocks them off.

NY is planning on giving him around $4 mil/yr, which i don't think he'd get in arby, so it seems the compensation pick would almost be a given.

The braves have a way of signing veterans and usually having at least one good year with them. I would like to seem them go after better ss then julio lugo. I mean I don't think garciaparra is completely a wash-up yet. He went to college at Georgia Tech as well. I just don't see lugo having a good year at all for us or anybody.

My take on Lugo:

.295, 6 Hrs, 57 RBIs, 89 Runs, 39 SBs

Not bad overall - good speed and he scored runs. He is 31 yrs old though and made 25 and 24 errors the last two season so that doesn't fit well with the Braves typical strategy. His OPS was .765 so thats not so hot either. Plus they'll only get him for one year. If they can get him for Estrada and maybe a prospect (not davies, betemit, etc.) then I think it'd be a good move.

They really need a lead off hitter and other than maybe Langerhans, they have no one. I do want to see Betemit get a chance to be a regular though. Maybe they can go after Damon, put him in left and let Langerhans ride the pine.

Furcal is a huge loss... he was almost perfect at shortstop and could rocket the ball 90mph to first base... I think they should've let him pitch the final few games vs. houston.

I am happy with the Renteria move because Marte wouldn't really have a position for atleast a few more years unless Chipper moved back to the OF. Plus the Sox are picking up a lot of his contract and so the Braves only have to pay him $6 mil a year which is much less than trying to give Furcal $13 mil.

Renteria had a bad year in Boston, but during his time with the Cardinals and Marlins, his stats were much better all around than Furcal's so the Braves might be better off if Renteria can find his stroke again. Putting Giles as the leadoff hitter is worrisome though...

Also it looks like the NY Mess are going to sign Franco - bunch of cocksuckers. I was hoping that Franco would turn 50 with the Braves. Granted that is 3 years away and he could still wind up back in the ATL.

Ever year around this time I scratch my head at the signings/trades the Braves make and every year they win the division. For now I'll trust what's going on but will be curious to see how it works out next year. As far as leadoff goes, it'll be Giles unless Betemit is in the game.

Renteria is an upgrade over Furcal. Wouldn't hurt to find a leadoff hitter so Giles won't have to hit first. Stacked lineup next year though.

That lineup is not as stacked as I wish it was because there are still alot of question marks.

Frenchy got off to a torrid start last year, but really slowed down once pitchers realized he'd swing at anything.

McCann may not be able to handle the day to day beating a catcher takes and still be able to put up reasonable numbers.

Langerhans plays hard and is great defensively, but his still a 650 type OPS hitter.

Renteria may be only a 700 OPS hitter or hopefully he'll get back to his 800 OPS form.

Andruw's season could have been a fluke.

Chipper needs to play 162 games.

LaRoche is still very inconsistent, but atleast with Franco now gone, maybe he'll realize he's the everyday player even against lefties.

Plus the starting pitching is still up in the air. I am assuming it'll be this:

Smoltz
Hudson
Sosa
Ramirez (if they give him arbitration?)
Davies?

I am not sure what happened to Thomson? I think he's a FA - he sucked after coming back from his injury anyway. Bullpen still looks extremely weak even with the new additions. All three guys they added are 5+ ERA guys so I'm not even sure why we went after them other than the fact that they have live arms (kind of like Sosa). Devine could realistically be closing for us next year.
