Rather than waste their time preaching to the choir, interested and talented writers should try their hand writing for Technician, where their ideas will get better exposure.

Of course, I am assuming that the people are good writers, that ideas can overcome divisiveness, and all sorts of other stuff that probably isn't true.

I know... the logo is still ah,,,, in an evolutionary stage i think (by the way, its a boat )... But rather than playing off of the logo's pro's and con's what do you folks think of the... Articles?

I think the "boat" looks like three mountains and their shadow.

here is a boat:

Shouldn't their boat be a yacht?

I wad debating whether it was boats or mountains. The "banners" or whatever hanging off the bell tower are also a bit confusing.

Not to be overly critical, but you asked for feedback so:

http://www.broadsidemag.com/volumeseven/issueone/dulin.asp

Quote :
"At the same time, OPEC has been lowering production to boost profits."

where did you find that information? According to the US DoE OPEC oil production has increased almost every year pretty steadily since the mid 1980s. There have been some dips, but overall it has been increasing. You might be able to argue that OPEC countries haven't been increasing production at the highest rate they could, but it's incorrect to say they have been lowering production, since on average it has been increasing.

Quote :
"The point is our supply is very close to our demand so any disruption in supply can cause a major change in market value."

This is a very true statement and is a major problem.

Quote :
"The first thing to do is temporarily remove the taxes. Three dollar gas becomes $2.60. "

If you lower the price you'll increase demand which will only exacerbate the problem above.

Quote :
"I am not advocating the dumping of crude into the gulf; just get rid of some of these silly rules. "

Specifically, what rules are you referring to? Or are you just assuming that some of them have to be silly since they're environmental regulations.

Quote :
"since with lower environmental standards; smaller refineries will be financially viable. "

The one doesn't necessarily follow from the other. There are still huge costs in shipping and refining oil. Also, you haven't offered any examples of which environmental laws are causing higher start-up costs and how much those costs are. After reading your article I'm not at all convinced that enviromental regulations significantly contribute to high gas prices or oil refinery start-up costs.

Quote :
" Finally, we need to invest in some alternative energy sources. The big one is nuclear energy."

I can see how it can decrease demand for natural gas but how will nuclear energy decrease demand for refined oil?

Your article is too much opinion and too little fact. Make sure to provide evidence for your claims, or else people will find them unpersuasive. It sounds like you're just regurgitating the typical republican talking points that less taxes and environmental accountability will solve all our problems.

Thanks for the input Jugband. All of us are new to the... business, so any critiques of our writing and other issues are always appreciated. While I am making it my personal goal to let the content of the articles speak for itself (and thereby not respond to anything specific in critiques) I do appreciate it and will admit that you echoed a few points made by our staff. What do you guys think of the other articles, I'm sure my fellow writers would love the input. And you can always email us directly, the addresses are on the website ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^.

Quote :
"[6] United States Declaration of Independence (July 4, 1776)"

Haha, I love how he has the publishing date on the Dec of Ind...

Quote :
"They state that in 1996, “handguns were used to murder 2 people in New Zealand, 15 in Japan, 30 in Great Britain, 106 in Canada and 9,390 in the United States.”[2] While these facts cannot be disputed, they have flaws for comparison. New Zealand is much smaller than the United States and has a smaller population density. More people have a rural way of life and just as our small towns naturally have a lower violent crime rate, so do theirs and the gun has never been as much a part of Japan’s culture as any Western Nation."

This has to be the most ignorant piece of shit I've ever read in my life. So, New Zealand doesn't have a lot of murders because they are more spread out, unlike the US. But Japan is more dense than the US but doesn't have more murders because they haven't been humping their firearms like the US.

Do us a favor and never publish shit from this guy again.

yea, and it's not like NZ doesn't have cities either, Auckland is much bigger and denser than Raleigh but has less gun violence.

Quote :
"the gun has never been as much a part of Japan’s culture as any Western Nation."

so then sword related violence should be high in Japan by this logic?

gg on using "his or her" though. I was surprised to find that in the Broadside. Of course the author reverts to using "his" later in the article.
