My girlfriend is a Communications major and her advisor has said she "didn't know the date of the commencement ceremony," the communications office said that there might not be a ceremony due to "tight budget restraints, lack of funding and lack of space." This all sounds like bullshit to her and it should. I'm posting this because she doesn't have a wolfweb username. If you're a Communications major this should probably concern you a whole hell of a lot and anything you could do to help would be awesome for the whole department, i.e. bitching, petitioning, talking to department heads, student organizations, etc. Thanks a whole lot, asshole comments (which I know are coming)...go fuck yourself.

I wish that had happened last May for the Business Department. It was hot as hell and they were running behind...we had to wait like two hours longer than we were suppose to.

I'm probably in the minority, but graduation ceremonies are just a waste of time to me. Show how much you've accomplished in the past 4+ years by going out and getting a good job...not by walking up and getting a fake diploma and going to lunch with all your family and friends so they can tell you how they proud they are of you.

Just something else to feed the go. And the speakers usually suck too.

so what exactly is so expensive about a ceremony like this? food & beverage? i mean, i'd rather have something in a classroom with no price tags attached than no ceremony at all....

[Edited on October 30, 2005 at 10:16 PM. Reason : yea brick, i generally agree, but my mom promised me angus barn, so I'm just going to grin and bear]

That's awful. I'm just a junior this year... but if it happens this year, it could just as easily happen next year too.

P.S. - She's probably a Communication major, rather than a Communications major, because I am a Communication major.

^^ Since you're being so particular, it's actually a lowercase 'c' in AP format. A communication major should know that.

No, most likely not. I do believe we've all read the course manual a time or two though.
Ehh, whatever...
If my communication degree had yielded a more lucrative job, I'd donate. The situation is really sad.

Good prep for real life where no one will give a crap about a degree in communication.

Ouch.

she might want to start by emailing craig smith (department chair) and cc'ing ken zagacki, victoria gallagher, the chass dean of students/undergraduate affairs, and oh yeah, technician.

and if that doesn't work, email (your favorite columnist at the n&o here). barry saunders and maureen what's-her-name are usually good at picking up these kinds of issues.

and if all else fails, contact the communication department's alumni association and see what they can do for you. their information is on the department's homepage.

My graduation day was horrible. I didn't know what the hell I was doing with my life, all I knew was I was poor as hell and had no car, no credit, nothing. We went to a restaurant that my dad hates, and my graduation "party" was, like, three people.

Ok, this is bullshit. When they start cutting back on fucking GRADUATION ceremonies, you're spending too much money somewhere else. If I see an actual article about this, or they announce this, I don't care if I'm in engineering or not, I will be writing a few letters of disgust.

I know at my boyfriend's college they hold their department ceremonies in public meeting space- a local park actually. It can't be too expensive.

I think rather than simply complaining, it might be more effective if you could help find a solution to the problem- maybe using a place they hadn't thought of yet?

[Edited on October 31, 2005 at 12:44 PM. Reason : I think the cost is more than space though- chairs, programs...all that too]

You let students and parents know about this, they'll find a way to rally and pay the $200 (or whatever is it) for a public meeting space.

I don't think any of this is official anyways ... I would send an email to somebody and get an official response.

My communication pants shrank in the wash and I had to throw them away because they created unsightly muffin tops.

State is way too large to have all the graduates walk the stage at the main commencement exercise (of course, they had no problem allocating a couple hours to honoring Chancellor Fox at my ceremony). They just have a keynote speaker, have the doctoral students walk the stage, and "recognize" the graduates of each college (you stand at your seat).

Your departmental ceremony is where you will actually have your name called, walk the stage, and receive your diploma.

not "they"

Fox had no problem allocating the time. She was always about herself

i too will be graduating in december and my advisor told me that they werent sure about our ceremony. Considering that tuition has gone up EVERY YEAR since I have been here I dont see why funding would be a problem. Maybe the chancellor or some of the other big dogs at this university could pony up some of their 6 figure salaries to help us out.

got an email today

we're graduating in the gym

at least its something

but they're talking ab giving "tickets" out

way to fucking go--- i have 6 family members coming in from out of town, not to mention the family in town-- sure would have been nice to know ab this limited ticket thing beforehand

all of these decisions really should have been made long ago-- did the department really think that students and parents would be ok with not having a ceremony?

And how big of a slice do you think CHASS gets of that? And more specifically the Dept of Comm? As compared to.......engineering or science?

Well in animal science we do tickets at graduation. So I had to limit the number coming. We have tickets every year but most do not realize that until about 6 weeks before graduation.

What gym? Carmichael, Reynolds? Reynolds dresses up really nicely. Carmichael can be made to shine. Gyms are better than classrooms- unless they have stages.

I forgot where I saw it, but NC is ranked one of the lowest 10 states for public tuition cost. That and tuition != graduation funding. Yes, there should have been some better planning, but don't confuse the two.

Botany has done that for awhile and it works out nicely most of the time. Its also a function (largely) of how big the graduating class is. Some of the larger rooms on campus are difficult to reserve (or are reserved WAY ahead of time).

You tried talking to your advisor first and asking another graduating student (w/o as many incoming people) to let you borrow some tickets?
