Quote :
"RALEIGH, N.C. -- Raleigh leaders are asking again that the city's water customers cut back on water to avoid mandatory water restrictions. But this time, they want customers to do more.

The request comes after city officials met with members of the Army Corps of Engineers Thursday to discuss low water levels at Falls Lake, which serves as the main source of water for Raleigh and other Triangle-area locations, such as Fuquay-Varina, Garner and Holly Springs.

City officials said the lake is not at a crisis level yet, but it could be within the week.

"We have yet to reach the low point that the lake reached in 2002," said Dale Crisp, city utilities director. "And of course, we did implement mandatory measures in 2002. If the lake drops to that level or below the low point like we did in 2002, then I think the prudent thing would be to move to mandatory measures."

Currently, Falls Lake is about 6 inches from where it was in 2002 when the city imposed mandatory restrictions.

On Sept. 20, city leaders imposed voluntary restrictions and asked that water customers cut back their usage by 10 percent or more.

"We need that to be doubled," said Dale Crisp/Utilities Director: "We actually need water customers to cut back an equal amount again."

The city plans to stick with voluntary conservation until the area receives normal rainfall for this time of year."

PLEASE DO YOUR PART TO CONSERVE WATER

we had like a week of steady rain the second week of october. It was beautiful, because i had just seeded about three days beforehand.

but since then it's been dryer than the average TWWer's sex life.

I did notice that they were watering the steps of Reynolds yesterday. I suppose the university is doing its part in the conservation efforts.

Falls Lake looks like a football field where I-85 crosses it. It has been dry long enough that bright green grass is growing on it and there is only water in the very center of the channels.

I hiked near the Upper Barton boat ramp not too long ago and ended up going off the trail and just walking around the shoreline because the water had receded about 40 feet from the woods in most spots.

I thought Greensboro got its water from Townsend/Brandt/Higgins. Are all three man-made?

if falls lake's level falls about a foot more, we can expect level 3 restrictions.
as it is now, we will run out of drinking in jan. 06

Run out of drinking water? Hell no! We're just going to have to put up with about infinity inches of random snowfall that lead to massive flooding (upon melting) and a refill of the lake.

these motherfuckers*........."oh my god, water is running out, but I am COMPELLED to water my lawn"...

what dumb asses.

*unless your lawn is new. I don't know what it is, but around home, we sure as hell don't water the lawn- EVER- and it is nice, thick, and green. Very attractive yard. But then again, I guess not everyone has the same lawn. And when you have a $HUGE sprinkler system, you just HAVE to use it.

level 3 means that they shut down car washes, no watering yards, plants or washing cars.
first time offenders can expect a $1000.00 fine

thats right 1k for not obeying water restrictions, even if its the first offense.

luckily the city is actually doing something about this. they are building a new treatment plant on lake benson, so next year (maybe 2 years) we won't have to worry about this.

the drought is just making the real issue more apparent: the population of raleigh has increased over the last 20 years and the city gov't has been slack in making up for this fact concerning water availability

NCSU could save a lot of water by changing the shower heads in the gym and dorms to water saving kinds...it's like a damn gyser when you turn them on.

Bobby,

Depends on the grass. Some (most) are seasonal and meant to go down for a few months a year.
