some of my favorites are

Clipboard recorder - by lw-works

FileAlyzer/Foldalyzer - PepiMK Software

Almost all of the "Microsoft Powertoys" for xp.

DVD Shrink 3.2 -

Cryptainer LE - Cypherix

WinRAR 3.42

CCleaner

PC Inspector File Recovery - Convar

AVG Free antivirus (FUCK Norton antivirus)

K-lite codec pack (with Media Player Classic)

Snood

*Cough!*Photoshop 6.0 >.< *Cough!*

some of the best things IMO are actually probably already on an XP pro system
the best file search utility that i personally have used is the
"Windows file signature verification utility"

NTBackup

Windows Movie Maker (with service pack 2 leastways, the one that DOESN"T lock up every time) i guess they ironed some of the kinks out of it but it really *can be* a VERY powerfull media editing and composition tool. I think a large number of software packs nowadays rely solely on people's underestimation of its abilities

and after some hamfisted rooting around in my installation disk ive come to think that If you can find a version of xp with Microsoft's supplimental tools ( i have no idea if it comes with every copy or whatever) there are some extremely powerful disk and file editing utils in it that someone with more knowhow than me might find interesting

p.s i need more toys

After a fresh install of windows

The first piece of software I install after drivers is WinRAR.

I really need to go buy a copy. Its a great piece of software.

I wouldn't use "favorite" and "Windows media player" in the same sentence, without the phrase "to wipe my ass with"

I'll try to avoid previously mentioned programs:

Ethereal
mKw Audio Compression Toolkit
Visio Viewer
Acrobat
Ultra VNC
Winzip - still like it. You can dismiss the shareware thing right away.
irfanview- though I haven't tried much else
