Names that have been in the news the last 2 days:

Rafael Furcal for CF as a convert (ala Robin Yount or Mickey Mantle)--fox sports news yesterday
Ichiro via trade (in NY post this morning)

any yankee fans wanna chime in? i'd rather have Furcal, he is younger and wont cost us prospects in a trade.

Man, so they're really thinking about Furcal. I laughed it off yesterday. My bad whoever I laughed at. If they can get him, awesome. I don't know much about his defensive abilities, which has been the problem out there. Just don't overpay him. Don't need an all-star at every position. Remember 1998; remember 1998. They need to repeat that to themsevles.

The younger the better at this point I would guess. But I don't want to see any overpaying. Just cuz George can doesn't mean George should. It sounds like he's letting Cashman have more control this year so hopefully that'll put a leash on some things.

And I definitely don't want to see any more prospects traded. Especially not Eric Duncan. He's a relatively bright first-base prospect and Giambi is getting up there in age, his contract is up in three years and he's not that great in the field anyway. Duncan can be ready to go in 2007 and that would be WONDERFUL.

1998 was a special year. The reason they were so good is because they had a solid defense, and a bunch of patient hitters, an a great bench. Not to mention healthy, veteran pitchers. it will be hard to duplicate that, but i do think they need to tighten up their defense and to deepend their bench and bullpen. they have enough starting pitching returning to be able to put 5 competative starters out there.

lol...only today?

There have been rumors for a few weeks that we'd consider trading for Hunter, fueled by reports of him putting his house up for sale.

That doesn't necessarily mean the Yanks will definitely trade for him, but it leads people to believe he's on his way out of Minnesota.

Hunter will not be a yankee. Cashman said at the winter meetings this week that he has no interest in meeting the Twins demands of Robinson Cano for him.

Mickey Mantle came to spring training in 1951 as a shortstop, but they moved him when they saw the kind of speed he had.

yeah HE PLAYED SHORTSTOP IN THE MINORS

logged a total of 7 games at the position in 19 years in the majors

whereas furcal has spent 6 seasons in the bigs at shortstop

so, like i said, its not even a valid comparison

I mean really, what does it matter?

Mantle was originally a shortstop and was converted to CF. Furcal is a SS and would be converted to CF if the Yankees sign him.

Yes, Furcal played SUBSTANTIALLY longer and in the majors at the position. But I don't get how you say it's not valid at all.

And really...that's splitting hairs a little bit.

Exactly - how many years did a-Rod play SS before the Yanks made him 3B?
