My Steam account connects, it says "preparing to launch Half Life 2," the screen goes black, then it restarts. 11/19/2005 12:46:28 PM |

I have never played it on this machine before, but I am close to the recommended specs so I don't think hardware is an issue. 11/19/2005 4:05:18 PM |

sounds like a driver issue
either that or maybe just kick your computer a few times 11/19/2005 6:44:18 PM |

I also looked around to see if there were any new drivers I needed for the GeForce 6200. I couldn't really find anything. Video drivers probably aren't an issue because I was able to run a pirated copy of HL2 for about 30 seconds before lack of Steam caused it to crap out 11/19/2005 7:17:29 PM |

Did you try the simple stuff like uninstalling/reinstalling? 11/19/2005 8:05:40 PM |

not yet, no. i did install a couple of discs and couldn't stay up to install the rest, so it was idle for a while between discs. that could have done it. 11/20/2005 2:05:20 AM |

Driver or DirectX issue more than likely ... should be error logs somwhere (either windows or hl2 generated) detailing what is happening. 11/20/2005 9:57:34 AM |

first i'd try using the newest directx, then i'd try reverting to directx 7 (which valve made sure to include support for in hl2 for older vid cards).
you can use this tool to go back to dx7: http://www.freewebs.com/firecat/
again, that's just what i'd do 11/20/2005 10:43:11 AM |

sounds like a driver or directx issue to me.
but yeah, things to try before giving up on stuff like this:
uninstall the game, delete any folders it still left on your drive, reinstall it. make sure you also deleted any temporary install folders.
install newer video drivers. (also, try uninstalling the device and downloading fresh drivers for it. sometimes you have the latest drivers, but they've become corrupted)
check for newer versions of direct x.
