A milspec or GI repro ( the only difference is the sights and a lowered ejection port) is about $400 from PDHSC. The stainless one is about $30 more. I think they are the best deal on the market, they have a lifetime warranty if you ever have a problem. I would feel comfortable with one as a ccw if I upgraded the sights ( $30 from brownells) and filed the hammer spur off a little if it bit me on the web of the hand. Its still a steel framed full size gun, though so its heavier than my current carry gun.

As far as the original post, smith and wesson never set the world on fire with the 4 digit guns, but they were issued by many many police departments over the years. They say Ruger is the best gun a lawyer could design, they over build everything. That causes their stuff to be sorta blocky but very reliable. The DA/SA trigger pull is hard to master, unless you get DAO. Either gun would be fine to carry.

Just dont get a .40 cal Glock, the muzzle flip is excessive and uncomfortable.

just glad someone pointed out that where you shoot them is far more important than what you are shooting (caliber)

As to jams etc, get a good quality weapon w/ good ammo and learn to shoot properly and they shouldn't be an issue.

If your sole purpose if home protection either don't worry about it, or if you must worry , go w/ a 12ga.
