Diablo 2 was like the last great RPG game to come out on PC. Everything today is either WW II shoot'em up or strategy based like Black and White 2 and Civilization 4.

Im trying to find something to occupy my time this thanksgiving break. im not buying WoW.

Dungeon Siege 2 maybe. Its more of a diablo 2 style action rpg as opposed to some final fantasy/pokemon type thing.

Morrowind, KOTOR I and II, and Icewind Dale 2. I'm not a diablo fan at all, at least not single player.

I know it isn't an RPG but I would recommend Battlefield 2 to anyone who plays PC games. It has a little bit of flight sim, strategy, and first person shooter. Beware though, it takes a pretty up to date machine to run it without it looking like crap.

Morrowind is very very much RPG like. Takes a bit but once you realize you can go anywhere and do anything it owns.

The last great RPG was Neverwinter Nights. If you don't have it, you can get the platinum edition (game + 2 add ons) for like 30 bucks now....guaranteed to give you well over 100 hours of playing within the D&D realm/rules

You can easily get 400-500 hours of playtime in trying to finish Morrowind. THe game is just phenominal. KOTOR are also great for a change of pace/scenery. Neverwinternights was definitely fun too.

Was there a difficulty setting in KOTOR 1/2? I remember that after a certain level (fairly early on IIRC) you can get lvl3 force lightning. Afther that you are nearly invincible (especially in part 2). Just force lightning a large group 3 times and your force has recharged by the time you make it to the next group.

I always recommend the Chaos Empire mod for Diablo 2 LOD. It is free and it tweaks the game just enough to extend the life of D2LOD.

Morrowind is pretty good (and also cheap). Just be prepared to have some patience. The world is huge and you walk at a snails pace. There are things that help you get from point A to point B a little more quickly but the walking aspect will never go away. I think the gaming time for games like Morrowind and Zelda Wind Waker always get inflated a whole lot because you end up spending many of those gaming hours just traveling around.

KOTOR was an incredible game, but the bugs were really fucking annoying.

From what I've heard, the sequel had the same problems (and apparently the ending was severely cut because it was rushed to meet a deadline).

^KOTOR 2 wasn't a very good game. There was no ending. Two or three of the levels were directly off the original but they had less area to explore. In other words they were dumbed down versions of the original levels. I played each twice; once on the light side, once on the dark side. Part 2 kept giving me the odd light points when I was trying to be the darkest guy in the solar system and it kept giving me odd dark points where I thought I was trying to be nice.

yeah and if you turn it up you will definately have to save often in a few places

seriously KOTOR 1+2 was awesome

^Yeah, there was an ending... if you can call it that.

I'll also comment that any cut scene that shows your ship flying from one planet to another during the course of the game was both longer and more fulfilling than the actual ending.

yea the ending to 2 sucked balls.

but like i said in my first post, if you liked diablo 2 and want a similar style game, go pickup Dungeon Siege 1 or 2.

^ also sacred gold is fairly good. slightly slower paced but with better plot and more interesting world and quests then diablo 1 and 2. more depth, less slaughtering basically. weirder character classes too.

^^if that's the case, then the thread was over 2 days ago when I said NWN

Fallout 3 will never happen

Fallout 2 was amazing, 1 was too short (probably b/c I played it after 2). Tactics was fun, but it took a while to get into and had a totally different feel.

If you're looking for old school, I would HIGHLY recommend Planescape: Torment. It dates about five or six years, but it's probably one of the best RPGs to come out on the PC.

I vote morrowind, with all the mods and stuff out for it now one can waste so much time. I still play diablo2 from time to time as well, the 1.11 patch added some new fun things and I am just getting back into it after quitting during 1.09. I also like NWN.

I miss Adventure type games, particularly the comedic variety. Someone needs to put out a good silly adventure game one of these days.

The graphic adventure genre is basically dead. Escape from Monkey Island didn't sell worth crap, and then Lucasarts scrapped development of the new Sam & Max.

I'm hoping Longest Journey 2 gets released, but only time will tell on that one.

^ yeah I was really dissapointed about the whole sam and max thing... I loved that game back in the day. Anyone remember the kyrandia games? Remember the dark days of FMV adventure games? Probably the only good thing to come out of that was under a killing moon.

But at least there's still hope for the CRPG players out there in the form of oblivion, NWN 2, dragon age, and fallout 3.

word to that, but i doubt someone looking for a diablo clone is gonna like the heavy text style of this game. it was the only game i could handle so much text and not be bored.

I was always more of a fan of Lucasarts games.

Sierra games suffer from the "Oh, you clicked on something. You're dead!" style.

And the older ones were worse...like that fucking spiral staircase in KQ2 you had to walk up using the arrow keys.

SIERRA ADVENTURES > EVERYTHING.

I played almost all of them. Space Quest, King's Quest, Quest for Glory, Leisure Suit Larry, Freddy Pharkas Frontier Pharmacist. I could still tell you exactly where to go or what to do in any part of King's Quest V. In that particular screenshot (depending on where you were in the game) you needed to get the golden needle from the haystack (after saving the ants from the dog), throw the shoe at the cat to save the mouse, then later go in the house and get knocked out (only to be saved by the mouse that you saved earlier).

I think Quest for Glory IV: In Shadows of Darkness was my favorite though, the narrator was John Rhys-Davies!

V I dabbled in some Lucasarts stuff also. Mainly the Rebel Assault and Indiana Jones games, but I also played a little Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle.

Im still pissed they cancelled the full throttle sequel

I played a demo for KQ8, it was like a 3D version of Quest for Glory in that it had a real time combat thing. Also the puzzles were more like something you would solve in Prince of Persia then just 'Use x item on y person'

So many adventure games died when they went 3d it seems. Some companies weren't able to do it without crapping out the game. Ultima (light rpg with adventure elements) and kings quest are good examples.
