Due to failed attempts to get a new stadium in Miami, the Marlins have received permission to talk to other cities about a possible move as early as 2008. So far the team has expressed intrest in Charlotte, Portland, and Las Vegas.

I would say to give us the baseball team, but with the Durham Bulls and Carolina Mudcats, not to mention some of the other minor league teams close by, there may be some issues there. 11/23/2005 9:03:25 AM |

This is a HORRIBLE idea. The Southeast does NOT need another baseball team. The Braves don't even get the support they deserve. It shouldn't even be cosidered. I've heard good things about Portland and they have a stadium easily upgradeable to MLB standards.. 11/23/2005 9:14:22 AM |

It will be Portland if the Marlins are serious about moving. My guess Miami builds them a stadium and this turns out to be a bargaining chip. 11/23/2005 9:27:01 AM |

^^ So Miami is going to have to build another football stadium and baseball park? The NFL already said that Miami was supposed to get the 08 Super Bowl but that was only if they built a new stadium. Or then again I guess they could just share again maybe. 11/23/2005 9:33:12 AM |

^^^^^^ The Braves get plenty of support.
Just not in attendance figures
It would be a bad idea only because the southeast isn't as densely populated as other places in the nation. I love the Braves, but I'm not going to drive some 7 hours to get to Atlanta.
If they did plan on sticking another team in the Southeast, I think NC has to be a prime consideration though. We sit right between DC and Atlanta, and our state is one of the more populated ones down south. Not to mention, since we get such a large influx of yankees, they'll help pad our attendance figures. 11/23/2005 9:55:07 AM |

^^^^ They will not be building a new stadium....Miami is actually building a mall, hotels, and a hall of fame around Dophins stadium. They are just going to upgrade dolphins stadium.....

Why not move them to Connecticut or Jersey?
The greater NYC area/market can easily support another team and it would help competitiveness by taking some, although not alot, of the huge markets that Bos, NYM, & NYY have.
To me, that is the only way to control the rediculous money that those clubs can fork out.
I know it won't happen, but I'm just saying the new team would enjoy a good market & it help competitiveness.

what a horrible sports city miami is. the team wins two world series championships in 7 years and they can't get people to come to the ball park. atlanta and miami are worthless as far as fans go. 11/23/2005 11:39:15 AM |

well, Miami doesn't exactly have a huge population of people that grew up in the area and love their local teams.
Not many NY or New England fans that have moved to the Miami area and then suddenly switch allegiances. Nor are the eldery population that live on fixed incomes going to attend many games. So it's not suprising their lack of fan support.
Atlanta on the other hand, just plain sucks... 11/23/2005 12:03:55 PM |

People up here have fierce alliances to their teams, no way another one would work well. CT and NJ are so close to Boston/NYC/Philadelphia that there's no need to build a new stadium. Seriously, where would you build a stadium in NJ? Jersey City? Trenton?!?
And Las Vegas is a horrible choice. Not even close to a big enough population to support that.11/23/2005 1:56:18 PM |

Thats what I think every time I hear about Vegas. Not that many people actually live there and would hold season tickets. I think Charlotte would be good. Baseball is popular enough. My family would buy season tickets prolly.11/23/2005 2:02:26 PM |

The Las Vegas metro area is the fastest growing area in the country, with almost 2 million people living there now. The city is also more than willing to spend big $$ for stadiums. But the leagues have to get over the whole gambling image thing first. 11/23/2005 2:17:09 PM |

^^^^^Yes people up there have strong allegiances, but I think if they focus their aim on a certain area of people, it would work. Obviously, they wouldn't take a big part of the market though, but still a pretty big one. I think an NL team could work in CT for example. It would help fuel a rivalry with the Mets, much like the Yanks & Sox.
The NJ Nets moving to Brooklyn was embraced by people who were mostly Knick fans. And their certainly are still plenty of people who enjoy going to games.
But as I said, I know it won't happen. The afforementioned teams would never allow it of course. In addition to the stadium funding issues.
And I think Vegas would be a plenty big enough market. They would get alot of opposing team fans at games with the tourist market & Vegas is growing very fast with lots of money to burn. Vegas doesn't have a single pro sports team as well. Miami already has the Dolphins & Heat, in addition to the Marlins. Vegas doesn't have anything, except a NASCAR track. They certainly can support 1 pro team, if not more.

^^They have enough of a permament fanbase. More people live there than you think. And it is growing. And there are no other pro sports teams to fight with. And the fans there are pretty well off, so they can easily afford tickets. 11/23/2005 2:40:16 PM |

populations: charlotte - 580,597
denver - 560,415 pittsburgh - 327,898 st louis - 338,353 cincinatti - 323,885 vegas - 508,604
just to name a few. charlotte definitely has the numbers to support MLB, but only if the city is willing to spend the money to build the stadium uptown.
