Following the wife to her job next year, I've heard a lot of bad things about this city and I'm not particularaly looking forward to it. Is there a "good side" or any area that is less dangerous than another? We're planning on going down there over the break to scope it out, but I don't know much. Thanks.

I'm from Fayetteville - try your hardest to find a place in the Haymount area. Coldwell Banker has the best selection of houses and condos on the market in that area. Don't live in the Westover or EE Smith school district... and I promise, it's not always as bad as everybody says.

i agree..the haymount area is the nicest. not sure what your income is, but there's some beautiful houses around the fayetteville academy/terry sanford school district. it's definitely not the safest city, but i haven't run into any major problems yet.

Yeah, I've noticed it's nowhere near as dangerous as people make it out to be--especially after living around NC State's campus for a while, I'm just puzzled as to how they can call Fayetteville a hellhole. After they pulled the liquor licences from just about every establishment on Hay Street (about 5-10 years ago, if that), the place really cleaned up its act. Now downtown Fayetteville is actually a very nice area that I've brought my mom and dad to.

I'd be happy to show you around. I know of a whole bunch of places that are fairly nice. Are you looking for a house or an apartment?

Downtown Fayetteville is cute, especially near the Huske Hardware House. If you can afford an apartment downtown, I'd go for it. Everywhere else in fayetteville is really depressing: brick strip malls, food lions and run down building everywhere. It's a real eye sore. I lived there for 4 years and it was my least favorite place. Just dumpy, run down and depressing.

As far as crime...I didn't feel like it was a terribly dangerous place to live, but I steered clear of seedy areas. Shrug. Enjoy, it's an experience.

i work in fayetteville. hate to agree with the stereotype, but it is pretty dangerous (not all areas). i second the vote for haymount, but good luck! it will be expensive and probably not much available. they are trying to revamp downtown... so maybe that would be okay. in general, avoid walking around past dark. where does your wife work?

you might try the hope mills area... newer subdivisions there

also, i lived in hope mills for about 4 years and i liked it. it was pretty safe too. as for places to avoid in fayetteville, stay clear of murchison road haha. and i agree...they're really trying to improve the downtown area. there's nicer shops coming in to the area and it's looking cute.

Look at houses in Hope Mills, especially Cypress Lakes and Wyndemere (sp?) if you're looking to buy. It's more chill and more in the country, and the commute is not bad at all. I would suggest somewhere in the South View, Jack Britt, or Terry Sanford school districts.

I lived there for about 19 years. I'm 21 now, family's moved to Cary. Basically the areas around the Academy and FTS (Terry Sanford HS) are great places to live.

Checkout the Haymount area, Vanstory Hills, along Morganton Road away from McPherson Church Road are all pretty much great neighborhoods leading toward downtown. Also look down McPherson Church moving South between Raeford & Morganton Roads. Might try looking off of Bragg Blvd too.

I stayed there for 7 months on an internship.

I stayed off Exit 62 (I think) off I-95...it was the "Wade" exit. There's some nice housing developments in there w/ good, safe neighborhoods and really close to grocery stores and stuff, and the mall is like 10 mins. away.

The city is kinda ghetto...it's like NC Central, yet instead of on a campus, it's the whole city. Personally, I disliked it. I didn't DESPISE it and it was alright and all, but you'll miss Raleigh (or just about anywhere) a lot.

It's not dangerous unless you put yourself in dangerous areas (bar strips, etc.).

I live outside of Fayetteville right now and yes, there are nice parts. Haymount is nice and has a cozy feeling to it. Downtown near the Huske Hardware Restaurant is nice if you like the uptown apartment feeling too. I would also recommend living in Hope Mills-it's technically like 5 minutes from Fayetteville but the houses are larger and nicer around there. Stay away from "the merc" or Bragg Blvd and their surroundings. There are also certain shopping centers where you just shouldn't go in after dark or else panhandlers will constantly bother you (ie: Food Lion off Southern Ave/Legion Rd). Spring Lake also has some nice subdivisions you could check out. They're 5-10mins from Fayetteville and have some restaurants, a super walmart, grocery stores, etc.

Fayetteville really isn't as bad as folks like to make it out to be.

Exactly. As long as you avoid the Merc or Bragg Blvd you're relatively safe. If you want bars or clubs, just go up to Raleigh or Wilmington and play it safe. Other than that, It looks and feels just like any other urban area. If you've survived NCSU's campus at night, you should do all right there.

to respond to the question about jobs in fayetteville,

I work at the Department of Social Services on Ramsey St. DSS employs a ton of people in Fayetteville, as does Kelly Springfield (now Goodyear), and Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. There are a ton of medical professionals in that area, a ton of schools, a ton of daycares, just like anywhere else.

You can compete with the, what, 11 high schools now? and try to get a job working at the mall, or at whatever the newest chain restaurant is (I lost count of the number of Waffle Houses and Applebee's).

You can drive to all three Super Wal-Marts in less than an hour. The Super Wal-Mart closest to the mall has a Waffle House in the parking lot, and you can see another Waffle House from that one.

Downtown is definitely improving fast (when we moved there in '89 it was all strip clubs and pawn shops). Go to Huske Hardware House for dinner, watch movies at the Cameo theater, and drink coffee at Rude Awakening. There are a lot of really neat houses around there, but you have to be careful. The ones worth having are usually ridiculously expensive, or they're only one street away from crackhouses.

Fayetteville is a pretty decent town as long as you live in the right areas. Haymount and Vanstory are prolly the two best areas to look at. While you're there visiting make sure you eat at either Chris's Steak House or Luigi's if you want a nice dinner, or MiCasita if you want the best mexican food you will ever have.

Downtown (Hay Street) has changed for the worse now that it's been cleaned up. I mean it's not everyday you can walk around and see an old black man with a bird's nest on his head...complete with a live bird. Then again when I saw that happen it was around the time that some magazine named it the worst place to live in America (84-85ish)

Alot of you are disqualifying yourselves as being able to accurately give advice about Fayetteville. I mean, seriously, Buffaloe Lakes one of the nicest areas?

The only thing I have read on here that is true is that Haymount is one of the nicer areas to live, although to say that it is expensive isn't exactly true. There are quite a few relatively inexpensive places to live in haymount you just have to know where to look.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is the rental market. Because of the huge military presence, the rental market in Fayetteville is actually probably a little more expensive than Raleigh (although you would never guess). On the surface, rates are about the same... but there is very little "dealing" you can do with the apartments around here because they have no problem keeping them filled.

^ I used to get creeped out by Luigis, but it has been completely remodeled for a while now and, to me, it doesn't even really resemble the restaurant it used to be.

i'm from lumberton which is 30 minutes south of fayettenam and well, sorry bud. but i can tell you the best places to go to. The Uglystick is the best place to party. It's like Coyote Ugly. Bartenders get on the bar and dance and there is always a live band outside, even if it's cold, they have heaters everywhere outside. Double Boggies is good as well. As far as good areas to live, i have no clue. The mall there sucks and trust me, you are going to get sick of looking at GI's.

I went to high school in Fayetteville, and I haven't been there in 3 years. From what I heard, they really have cleaned up downtown (which once looked like the remnants of a nuclear blast). When I did visit there 3 years ago, I couldn't believe how congested the mall area has become. The area around Cross Creek (Morganton, Skibo, Cliffdale Rds) is nothing but shopping outlets, strip malls, auto dealerships, etc. Fayetteville city developers really don't place much emphasis on aesthetics.

There are some really nice neighborhoods, however, tucked away from the awful congestion. Bragg Blvd is pretty much still an eyesore, and at night, you can catch the transvestite hookers walking the strip. There really isn't much to do, unless you like going to clubs that are populated with military guys and the civilian women who are trying to catch one to marry. Also, if you don't have a car, you're fucked..worst public transportation system (if there really is one) and everything is so spread out, you need a car just to cross the street.

And if you're looking for an intellectually stimulating environment, you're not going to find it there.

I (hopefully) got a job near Fayetteville and need to move there soon. Any advice on good apartment complexes in good areas (preferably in the southern part)? I've found some really nice listings but I know nothing about the area.

Also, I'm not set on Fayetteville, the job is actually pretty close to halfway between there and Lumberton, would living in Lumberton be better?

I live in Fayetteville (grew up here and just moved back). Never ever live in Lumberton. Robeson county has one of the highest, if not the very highest crime rate in NC. Fayetteville is a fine place to live. Central Fayetteville (Terry Sanford High School district) is actually a very nice and pretty place.

As for apartments there aren't many in that area. I have a friend whose dad owns Morganton Arms - not sure how nice they are but they're in nice location. You may be better off renting a house in the Haymount area.

Realtor.com has rental info there. Look up places in zip codes 28305 or 28303.

Terry Sanford school district is gonna be your best bet for a decent area and being convenient to shopping, restaurants, downtown, etc. Also look in 28304/28314 zip codes as well. Shoot me a pm if you have any questions about specific apartment complexes or neighborhoods or whatever. Except for my time at State, I have lived in Fayetteville my entire life.
