I'm thinking about getting an external drive for someone who's laptop doesn't have USB 2.0.

Beyond it being slow as hell, is there any chance of it not working at all with the older USB ports?

should just give you an annoying "warning! high speed device attatched to non-high speed usb port!" or some such garbage when you attatch it. it's never been a problem for me on my older machines.

It will work, but you are correct in that it will be amazingly slow. While youre at it, you should buy them a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card. They're not too expensive ($20-$50 depending on model) and its worth it for the time you save.

Wow... I never knew these existed. Thanks.

I've experienced the slowness and the annoying pop-up while transferring music to and from an mp3 player on my old PC, so I'll consider this a necessary purchase.

Any experience with any of these?

P.S.

This is a DVD burner, not a hard drive. Is the 2.0 card still worth it?
