I was told today that i am too laid back... by that they had never seen me angry. Granted i do get annoyed or frustrated, but i started thinking, in the past year nothing pops in my head where i had gotten angry. i find that odd? this is a loaded question i know... what do you think

it's not a loaded question so far as I can see

and yes, it's possible, but if you really are too laid back then you won't worry about it

Obviously not "too laid back" if someone telling you that has got you bothered.

you probably get angry

but you probably have a higher threshold than some, or at least a very high threshold before you really lose it

I used to never get mad until I started doing real work with significant consequences

its more likely that you just haven't had the opportunity or haven't taken the opportunity to do something of real consequence... Sure, school etc. is consequential but it wasn't enough to get me upset.

just hold tight until you've graduated and landed a rewarding job. i'm sure you'll get angry after a year or two of working there.

^^ are you not outraged by injustice?

or does only inter-office squabbling do it for you?

they're probably worried that the first person who really does piss you off is gonna inspire you to go fucking nuts and stalk people from office to office with an armalite AR-10 carbine gas-powered semi-automatic weapon, pumping round after round into colleagues and co-workers.

i have been extremely mad/upset before but i have only yelled or screamed about it less than 3 times ever in my life. i don't consider myself ultra laid back but when i get mad i handle it in other passive aggressive ways instead of yelling and shit

nope. for the most part, if it doesnt directly effect me, i dont give a damn. incompetence is about the only thing that gets me irate.

i can understand that..... you can care about injustice and even passionate enough to protest or do something about it, but doesnt mean you get angry over it. but i guess your right, i just dont view any of this as having real consquences. ehh

being passive-aggressive is the GAYEST THING EVER. that shit pisses me off. i fucking hate it.

i get angry, but it's a VERY rare moment if I really lose my temper and start yelling and stuff. Besides, usually if I DO get that pissed, I can barely talk. I think it's because I'm concentrating on not reverting to Cro-Magnon style and throwing down.

Really, though, I'm pretty laid back. Not so much in terms of letting many things slide, but in terms of dealing with everything pretty calmly and in a rational manner (until I finally do reach that breaking point, which is a pretty high threshold).

and yeah, all varieties of injustice tend to make me more pissed than petty things that lots of people tend to get pissed at.

EVERYONE gets angry. the difference is in how you deal with it. There's explosive anger, passive-aggression, and then just being flat-out passive and just taking it (although you're still pissed about it). I'd argue that explosive anger is what you want, mostly by virtue of it not being either of the other two. Keep in mind that when I say explosive anger, that doesn't mean flying off the handle easily. It just means that when you DO get angry, you don't handle it in a non-productive manner (passive) or a non-productive and totally gay manner (passive-aggressive).

passive-aggression is hardly ineffective and is oftentimes much more effective than flying off the handle and screaming.

of course, the intelligence of the individual contributes a great deal to the effectiveness of either strategy

well, i'd argue that flying off the handle and screaming is only rarely the most effective option

but when i say "explosive anger", i don't necessarily mean being limited to throwing a temper tantrum. I DEFINITELY have explosive anger, and I basically never yell or scream. I just tend to deal with people upfront and directly when they piss me off.

and I maintain that passive-aggression is fucking gay, at least for dealing with interpersonal conflict. If, for example, there's some brown-noser at your job who the boss thinks is the greatest thing, but who actually sucks and puts on a good show, well, yeah...it could certainly be effective to act as a saboteur in some capacity rather than (or maybe in addition to) taking the direct, explosive-anger driven approach ("Hey, if you tried as hard at your job as you do at jamming your nose through the boss's sphincter, you and everyone else would be better off.")

If you're an asshole to your roomate and he cleans the toilet with your toothbrush, that's not going to solve anything. You aren't going to know there's a problem, and you're gonna keep right on acting like an asshole.

well, like i said, it all depends on the intelligence with which you're implenting your passive-aggression. clearly, what you've just described is a completely stupid way of reacting and probably on par with flying off the handle and screaming in someone's face.

I tend towards passive-aggression and have never had a problem achieving my ends. If the situation calls for it, though, I'm capable of directly confronting an issue.

basically, use the right tool for the right job.

I've been told that being as laid back as I am is both a blessing and a curse

Its like, pretty much nothing angers me, but then again, nothing lights a fire under my ass to jumpstart me, either.

It was a good thing being a student at one of the most academically intensive high schools in Louisiana (ie, I wasn't that kid who stressed himself over tests), but it was a bad thing being an athlete at that same school (ie, it was hard for me to get rowdy and hyped up before games).

I will agree w/theDuke though, passive-aggressiveness is the gayest shit in the world
