The United States' one-thousandth execution (since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976) is going to happen tonight in Raleigh at 2:00 am Friday morning. Sounds like the right decision. Being under the influence isn't a good enough excuse for me. Just because you choose to drink/whatever, doesn't mean that the law all of a sudden doesn't apply to you.

I'm one of those that opposes the death penalty universally. I don't think killing is justice. It's only retribution in my book. By now he's dead...and the government killed him. That just doesn't sit well with me.

I respect everyone's right to an opinion but I see no reason why my tax dollars must pay for someone to sit in jail for murder for the rest of his/her life. There are very few cases that I see a reason to spare a murderers life.

I will even admit that I think its almost shameful it took us this long to get to 1000. I agree that we need to make sure that each person put to death is guilty but once they are, end the apeals and put them to death. I even think we should use capital punishment for more crimes but that is for another topic.

If we will euthanize a dog for agression and biting a person, why will we let a person sit in a jail cell with three meals a day and recreation time?

I know somebody already pointed this out, but it is far more expensive to execute a person than to let them serve a life sentence.

I think the best reason we've got for killing people is basically to make some other people feel better. That's a pretty shitty excuse for a reason.

I have actually read all of this info.
Personally I think that we as a legal system from the cops up need to work harder in the first place and then cut the number of appeals because overall I think its a waste of money there too.
As I said in my original reply, no I do not want an innocent person put to death but in reality I would be more than willing to go back to the old days where hangings took place the afternoon of the verdicts. I think people would think alot more about their actions.
