I'm going to rub this into a coworker for the rest of the year. He's a huge Hokie fan for no apparent reason, and talking to him about sports is like having ESPN radio regurgitated in your ear. I've been telling him that FSU would route VT all year long.

"This game is a dud. Fifth-ranked Virginia Tech (10-1) meets Florida State (7-4), which has totaled 36 points while losing three games in a row.

Boston College, Clemson and N.C. State all would be more competitive opponents for the Hokies today. But Florida State clinched the championship berth from the Atlantic Division title early, before its late-season slide."

yes, and for those who continually whine about having a tournament, suddenly you'll have 4 loss teams winning the national title occasionally.

^^ oh, but they would have "earned" it despite being less worthy than the teams that played well the whole season...

and then people would scream about how the playoff selection is wrong...

because people will bitch no matter what...

but anyway, how does this affect the ACC's BCS bid? i know there's some rule about the average ranking of your top team affecting your bid... will miami save us from this problem or are we screwed by fsu?

Will FSU be ranked up to 8th after this game?

Because I don't see how anyone this day in age in college football that could end the season as high as 8th while having 4 losses.

an 8 team playoff would involve the conference champions of the 8 major conferences.

8 major conferences?

big 10, pac 10, acc, big 12, sec

those deserve it, everyone else not so much

theres not gonna be a tournament, probably not ever

an 8 team playoff would still involve fsu at 4 losses... so that's kind of a silly arguement. oregan lost to usc so the only people they can blame is themselves as unfortunate as it is. the regular season is your playoffs. win out and poof you're in the NC, lose and you have no one to blame if you get left out

^ While I agree in a very loose, general sense, that logic applies how to a scenario with 3 undefeated teams?

The BCS is not the best system you could have, but it's also not all that bad either. The only time it truly failed was last year when an undefeated Auburn got the shaft.

The playoff doesnt have to follow the BCS rules, so FSU might not get to play. THey could make some rule that if the conference champion is ranked outside the top 20 then they can choose another team if they wish. Kinda like they can choose ND if they are ranked inside the top 15 right? (whatever the number is).

^that would be idiotic

those type of clauses tend to screw things up, and there would be a lot of complaints about the "subjective" choice element

better to keep it objective, if we did not want FSU to represent us this year, and if the Canes and Hokies are mad about it, they (along with BC) should have beat them on the field!

VT just exposed themselves on national TV when it counted the most

they were incredibly overrated and had no business being anywhere near a BCS bowl

not like FSU deserves to be there either

the ACC as a whole this year was not as good as everyone expected it to be

I'd say you can't even begin to qualify that statement objectively. I'll even argue you won't try.

^it's pretty clear that teams from other conferences would whip our asses. ACC teams have anemic offenses. Don't give me that BS about good defenses, either -- most of out teams have scrub, inexperienced QBs.

eh, i'm not so sure. Of course, I would assume that they could come up with wording that would make it fair, like "if a team doesnt qualify (not in top 20), they must be replaced by a top 10 team".

However, it would be idiotic of me to assume that the BCS could come up with something that made that much sense. I see what you're saying with the "subjective choice", but i just want them to come up with writing that makes it clear. That will never happen though.

you could say it failed the last two years by giving Auburn the shaft last year and USC the shaft the year before. fortunately, the media rewrote history and made USC the national champions two years ago, even though LSU won the BCS title game and was declared national champions at the time.

if USC falls to Texas, maybe the media will rewrite history again and make Auburn the national champions of last year.

look the team everyone picked to win the acc this year and many picked to win the national championship wasn't even able to win their conference championship. VT lost to a self imploding FSU team. FSU is going to be blown out by Penn State and I don't even want to think about what would happen if they played USC or Texas. The same could be said for any ACC team won the acc championship game.

don't write off FSU just yet against Penn St. VT is known for choking in big games, but that doesn't mean they didn't play a good team. FSU played in the championship game like they had been playing earlier this season, and I think they'll dominate Penn St. on special teams plays if they play like they did yesterday.

^^^The media didn't "re-write history" two years ago. 1 loss LSU beat Oklahoma in the BCS championship game. 1 loss USC beat Michigan in the. By default, the coaches poll champ was LSU because they won the BCS championship game. But the media poll voted USC #1. Thus a split champion. Nobody went back and re-wrote anything.

the media rewrote history by calling USC the national champions. The whole purpose of the BCS was to have a true national champion, and the AP poll means nothing. The only reason the media rewrote history is because two years ago the AP had no influence over the BCS. Ever since they got their 1/3 vote in it, they've been singing its praises.

maybe you should check this out:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2247629

the ACC has more teams in the top25 than any other conference with 6!
big ten and sec have 5 apiece

but it's ... the medias... poll. OF FUCKING COURSE the media is going to say USC was the champion because they were the champion of their poll... Both teams were the champion just like boxers who hold a belt from different governing bodies in the same weight classes are the champion. LSU just got unlucky in the sense that the coaches are less vocal(obviously) than the media

I'm still in firm belief that the only reason the AP voted USC to number one after that whole fiasco was to create controversy and leverage against the BCS so they could get involved. It worked too.
