Hear me now: From a developer's perspective, the bluetooth implementation on motorola phones is absolutely retched. these phones should be avoided at all costs if you want to ever use your motorola phone's bluetooth connection for anything other than a headset.
That's all, i'm out. 12/8/2005 12:30:57 AM |

verizon has a replacement policy (part of a settlement) for the v710 customers. i think the conditions are if you owned a v710 before january, then you can get a full refund on your phone and accessories, a $25 credit on your account, or you can cancel your account with no termination fee.
the settlement is because some people in CA (i think) sued verizon for advertising that you can transfer files, etc using bluetooth, whereas they jew you into using their network to transfer files by disabling the bluetooth
the 'new' model of the 710 is the e815 (or something like that), which still has bluetooth crippled, but apparently is supposed to be easier to unlock 12/8/2005 1:05:41 AM |

My Moto MPX220 bluetooth works quite well. What exactly is this implementation problem you are speaking of? From a consumer perspective, the Moto MPX220 bluetooth implementation is absolutely perfect. 12/8/2005 2:55:36 PM |

^ Id like to know how you did that. I'm waiting for my refund voucher to come in the mail, and I'll probably go pick up an 815.
I don't really care if I have file transfers or not, and I really like the 710, but if the 815 will let me do it, and it's free, why not? 12/8/2005 3:01:35 PM |

actually, it has nothing to do with Motorola, it has to do with the carrier that locks out the bluetooth software so that you will have you use their data services
if you get the unlock codes for the equipment, you can do anything
[Edited on December 8, 2005 at 3:04 PM. Reason : trust me on this, i have 5 motorola phones with Cingular and everyone is the same til you unlock em] 12/8/2005 3:03:06 PM |

actually Verizon locks the bluetooth to the point that limits the user from just about anything other than headset connection. they did this with the MotoV710 to the point that they had a class action lawsuit that started in California and eventually went in favor of the plaintiffs. Verizon locks the bluetooth modem connections so you cant dial up wirelessly (so you will use their EVDO internet) and locks the file transfer (so you have to use their MMS services). Financially it makes sense, its just a really shitty thing to do to a customer.
Cingular definitely locks the bluetooth modem abilities however im glad you can still do file transfers. That to me is the most important.12/27/2005 2:53:22 PM |

Actually, it has everything to do with Motorola. Java apps on motorola phones can't touch the bluetooth layer, The bluetooth headset profile interface is correctly implemented, but there's nothing in the phone for business card transaction and the contact list sync isn't standard OBEX, as advertised. Thankfully we can still browse the filesystem via a computer or PDA through the BT interface... but just make sure you keep your phone out and open, because you have to hit "Yes, it's ok" on your phone after every time you change directories or want to get or send a file.. nevermind they're paired or anything.
And what really gets to me is there's no facility for arbitrarilly sensing which buttons are pressed. So no controlling a powerpoint presentation or RC car with your phone. No, that would be too cool... and we reserve cool things for Sony Ericsson, Siemens, and Nokia.
Yes, these are issues for tech support. No, motorola's tech support dismisses every one of these problems as "an issue with the firmware that will be fixed in future versions". This has nothing to do with my provider, my phone was purchased retail, and unlocked.12/27/2005 3:37:32 PM |
