Ive got a sony vaio, everything worked fine and flawlessly up until a couple of days ago. I shut down start back up, took 15 minutes to get to the desktop. Then everything is running slower than shit. I defraged...which took about 12 hours. I don't put music, porn or anything else besdies a few basic programs on it. I run virus scan every other day, update it, have firewall etc...Almost everything besides the programs is on an external hd. its got 50 something gigs free on the computer itself. What could this shit be and what could be done to fix it?
Also it was new in July, used every day since and this is the first problem. Everything is slow, especially opening up any program...i.e. took 5 min to open up, but once im in it i can click thru links that open up in the same window at a near normal pace

Check to see if there are any background programs taking up your RAM. They running on startup. Have you done a spyware scan recently? 12/8/2005 12:01:39 PM |

no but im pretty sure it does adware and spyware when it does virus because i get this recurring spyware thats found every time and then deleted every time......under processes on task manager there is a "System Idle Provess" at the very bottom that is the image name. User name on that is "system" then under CPU its 99 where everything else is either 00 or a very low number, and memory usage is 28k. I tried to end the process and it says it can't end it. 12/8/2005 12:06:46 PM |

theres the first problem
as for overall slowness, your HDD might be on its way out. Grab some program that will read the SMART information off the drive (i like the trial version of Active SMART).
Any program that can read the SMART info should be able to tell you if theres a problem with the drive.
Drive problems would make the most sense because the initial program load time is the OS pulling the stuff off disk and putting it into ram. This could by why stuff runs fine once its in ram.
System idle process is a normal task. The cpu usage it shows is the % idle the cpu is at. 99% means your cpu isn't really doing anything at the moment which is a good sign.

yet while it says 99% idle, the hd light is on and its running wide open...and thats about how its always going whenever anything is happening...also the screensaver and shit is even slow, its like its having trouble keeping up and its not complex or anything, just the stars and space

Have you installed anything prior to restarting comp. Run hijack this and post the log.

All that shit is running at once? Run MSConfig and stop some of services that begin with "C:\Program Files...." under the Start Up tab.
To get to MSConfig, go to the Start Menu and click Run. Type MSConfig and go from there.

You can remove those services through hijackthis. Just so you know, when you run your antivirus, it doesn't necessarily remove spyware such as TrustyHound. Download Spybot http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html from one of those links and remember to update. Better yet, go ahead and format. If you do decide to format, make sure you have the drivers to install later. 12/9/2005 12:23:57 AM |

I have a sony vaio too, and my power supply just crapped out. FYI unless they've changed it (mine ~2 years old), your ps is not standard and they'll want ~$130 for a new one through (oh yes and customer support is a pain but I'm sure you could guess that). Other than that I've liked my viao and I like spy bot too. I can't remember the other thing I use, think it is ad-aware or something along with spy bot. 12/9/2005 4:30:40 AM |
