Anne Dawson , with files from James Gordon and ElizabethThompson, CanWest News Service Published: Thursday, December 08, 2005
MONTREAL -- Prime Minister Paul Martin will propose a ban on most handguns in Canada, CanWest News Service has learned.
Sources say Martin, who will make the election campaign announcement this morning, wants to choke off the supply of handguns in this country, particularly guns brought into the country illegally and those sold on the black market.
There will be some exemptions, including maintaining the right for police to carry handguns. The prime minister is also expected to announce a significant increase in resources for police to deal with the ban.
The Liberals say the thinking behind this crime strategy is that if no one is allowed to have a handgun in Canada, policing authorities will be in a better position to act on anyone who has a handgun or attempts to transport or sell a handgun.
The announcement will include the banning of all registered handguns in Canada. However, sources say special arrangements will be made for gun collectors.
This crime prevention strategy will be announced as a key plank in the Liberal election campaign Thursday." |

Ok, so I'd really like to go on a long rant about how Canada is one of the most liberal hell holes on the planet (and fucking cold too) and site some statistics about places where they've already tried banning handguns (e.g. London). But I think "CANADA SUCKS" is sufficient. 12/9/2005 7:52:03 PM |

wow, canada is a liberal hellhole? and here all this time, with all the time i spent there and all the time my dad worked there, i just thought they were a colder version of the US where you can get cheap drugs and pot and healthcare for all. guess thats only evident to people who dont have such a hard-on for guns, like theres a homeless man militia parked outside your house ready to invade and kill your children at any moment.
a ban is silly, yes, but some of you need to stop watching south park and listening to political pundits run their mouths and actually get out in the real world and learn something.
and yes, i am a liberal who owns a firearm, and i dont see why registering your gun should be such a hubub. you register your car, why not this one more thing? this is why i never joined the nra, this issue all seems very silly.

Registration does absolutely nothing good. Canada has a handgun registry, and all is does is cost taxpayers billions and now it tells the government who has gun that needs to be confiscated. Meanwhile, criminals who use guns are not affected because they don't register their guns.
Driving a car is a privilege. Owning a gun is a right. There is a big difference.12/11/2005 9:29:29 PM |

sure you have the right to own a gun but its going to be regulated regardless. You have a right to property and we still get taxed out the ass for everything we own and we still have to regester all our shit. A gun is no different. 12/11/2005 9:52:57 PM |

NO
<not yet anyway... This is by the way in the works for the great EU> Apparently guns were evil so they banned them... Violent crime rate only went up. ie: bats, crowbars, steel pipes, etc...
You can live through being shot.. even multiple times.. But get hit in the Skull ONCE with any of the above and you're pretty much screwed...

but if youre wreckless with a gun...you dont think it should be taken away?
either way you are endangering people. be consistent here. id like to think people could be trusted not to do stupid shit with their things, but people do. thats why we have consequences and reprocussions, to teach people not to be wreckless.

there is a definite difference here. if you are wreckless with a car, they don't take your car away. they take your license to drive it on a publicly funded road.

Did I say that? Please point to where I said that if I did.
It is illegal for felons to own guns. (Or at least handguns. I suppose it varies from state to state.) Doing stupid stuff will get your CCL taken away. Instant background checks are taken at each gun purchase from a dealer. I don't have a problem with this.

What does this have to do with registering guns?
Quote : | "oh, wait, the holy 2nd amendment...its beyond criticism and reform, regardless of common sense." |
Maybe common sense should tell you to never give up any of your rights. Your second amendment right is the one that allows the people to keep all of the others that they are entitled to.
Quote : | "A car.

Do you have to register a car that you are never going to drive on public roads?
And a gun registry serves an entirely different purpose.
Quote : | "that point definetly makes sense but theres still no reason why people shouldnt register the guns they own." |
In 1934, Germany required all guns to be registered. When Hitler came into power, the registry was used to confiscate the weapons. In 1967, New York City required long guns to be registered. When some of the guns were later deemed illegal, the registry was used to confiscate the weapons. California required assault weapons to be registered. It is now illegal to own an assault weapon in California. Brazil started a registery in the 80s. Recently, they have tried to ban guns. Australia started a registery. Now they have banned many guns. Canada created a gun registery. Now banning handguns is being proposed.
Are you seeing a pattern?12/12/2005 1:43:02 AM |

ok everything else you posted aside. This might have been true in the 1789 but is not the case now. I have no problem with gun ownership but to think a gun is required to protect your rights is just ridiculous. But I guess you're waiting for the commies to come.

it is just as true today as it was in 1789. there are plenty of countries out there where the citizens need to be able to rise up and protect their own rights. and not to get too salisburyboy here, but you're naieve if you think it can't ever happen here....

ok lets say it does happen. Your ownship of a gun is not going to stop the US government from blowing the shit out of your house with a missle.
thinking the ownership of a 9mm or shotgun is going to protect you from anything other than some minority you're afraid of is not rational. And the whole idea of militias protecting the state isnt even thought of anymore let alone used in the arguement for the 2nd amendment.

In 1789 it probably was't needed because everyone saw how they had to get their freedom. The founding fathers saw it fit to include it because further down the line, people would forget and think that it wasn't important.

The US Government blowing the shit out of my house isn't going to stop me from trying to take back what is rightfully mine. I don't think a government that actively attacks its citizens is one I want to live under.

Militias protecting the state is what the 2nd amendment protects. Those are the words used. How is this not thought of? The militia is protecting the state right now.
