I tried to install a new CD burner in my comp. It was supposed to be plug and play. I disconnected the old burner and left the "flat wire" in place, then connected it to the new burner (it's still connected to the original d drive and this new "X-drive" and the motherboard...

Only now, not only does the new "X" drive not work, but the comp can't read the D. It knows it's there and it has power but if you click on it on the My Computer Screen it says cannot access. Ideas plZ

did you move the little white or black jumper to it's proper place on the back of the drive?

if you look at the back of the drive, it should have a space for the audio cable, the drive cable (IDE) and the position jumper (master, slave, cable select).

if you aren't sure, always go for cable select or CS.

usually if the drive is first on the cable, then you'd select master and vice versa.

if that is even your problem...

If the IDE cable isn't keyed or isn't keyed "hard" enough, then you might have it in upside down on the new drive. If switching the jumper to cable select doesn't work, try turning the IDE cable upside down.

I've boogered that one myself, before. Unkeyed cables are the devil.

The wires were such that they couldn't be plugged in incorrectly. It should have been a straight-forward plug and play deal. There's no telling what I fucked up, although this computer has seen a lot of combat back in 'Nam... I mean College (moving eighteen times, spilled beverages, multiple ferret attacks and ice storm power surges.) I'll let you know what the geeks discover.
