So, Brokeback Mountain has barely made half-a-million dollars, yet it is being acclaimed as the best of the year? I'll bet all of that money came from the critics.

Funny how the media is propping it up when noone has seen it (as opposed to Walk the Line, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia.

Wait, I know why it hasn't made any money. Because there aren't a whole lot of gay people in the US, but there are a lot of Christians.

stupid Christians...

yes, just because a movie is good it's going to be monetarily successful...

or just because a movie is monetarily successful it must be good...

oh wait, neither of those work...

dammit...

I have as much desire to see this movie as any other movie where romance is central to the plot-- none.

of course hollywood is sucking this movie's dick because it is about homosexuality, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie

Five theatres. And it's actually only the ninth highest per theatre average, although it is the top non-animated.

But still, it's a remarkable feat.

The people who are spread all the acclaim have seen it though. And since studios screen movies for critics, they typically don't buy too many tickets.

This movie looks like The City and the Pillar for Dummies, complete with some sappy overtones. It's done well on Rotten Tomatoes though, so I'll probably check it out.

I will say, though, for the record: it's amazing that movies that involve rampant killing aren't controversial, but a movie about two gay guys is. That's America for you.

"Plummeting 2005 box office sparks Hollywood crisis

Tue Dec 13, 2005

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Even a much-hyped giant gorilla, a geisha and a schoolboy magician won't be able to create a happy ending at the US box office, as Hollywood ends its most disappointing year in nearly two decades.

[...]

Ticket sale revenues dropped five percent in the first 11 months of 2005 while the number of Americans going to the cinema fell by 6.2 percent compared with the same period in 2004, according to box office trackers Exhibitor Relations Co Inc.

The result is Tinseltown's most disappointing box office performance in 15 years as audiences, dazzled by their entertainment choices and disappointed by the mediocre films on offer, turned away from the cinema in droves."

And maybe I wrong, but I seem to remember that Hollywood has seen declining box office numbers for at least a couple of years now. It's a steady decline.

Propaganda films such as Brokeback Mountain aren't going to help. A sinking economy and rising inflation, fuel costs, etc, certainly contribute also.

Yup, that describes CINDERELLA MAN, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, STEALTH, THE ISLAND, DUKES OF HAZZARD, BE COOL, DOMINO, THE BROTHERS GRIMM, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, IN HER SHOES, ELIZABETHTOWN, THE MAN, XXX: STATE OF THE UNION, MISS CONGENIALITY 2, THE WEATHER MAN, SERENITY, THE JACKET, and THE LEGEND OF ZORRO perfectly.

The reason I don't go to the movies as much anymore is the substantially higher ticket price. What was $4.25 seven years ago is now $6.00. Last I checked, the price of milk isn't that much higher, neither is the price of bread. As such, I have shifted consumption away from the cinema towards the internet.

Of course, mission valley is still cool but they don't play everything.

I went to screenings of king kong and brokeback yesterday.

Kong manages to throw in a bunch of damaging societal stereotypes, and brokeback mountain has lots of boobs.

Very exciting.

This is about 85% of the reason why I don't want to see this movie.

The other 15% comes from the fact that while the concept of homosexual emotional relationships is not objectionable to me (save in the context of religion), I find actual images of gay men "doing stuff" extremely unpleasant. They ruined "Kinsey" for me, at any rate.
