to be fair, a good 65-70% of these movies have not hit more than 10 theaters yet, and at least 4 of them haven't hit ANY theaters yet

heres what i just wrote for my blogggo

i have a few predictions/hopes/issues

i'll start with the issues
i take issue with the fact that i live in whats considered flyover country, the space between LA and NY, so i won't get much of a chance at seeing several of the best films nominated

i also take issue at the way studios wrangle it so they get nominations before the movie is even out yet

now on to my hopes/predictions

best motion picture, drama - good night and good luck; despite all the buzz, i think brokeback mountain won't sweep the show until oscar night (if ever)
these awards shows increasingly can be a chance to thumb the nose at middle america (red states et flyover country) and while picking the gay cowboy movie might just be that choice, i think gn&gl is more subversive to the current administration than to the social "norms"

and thats what is more important, there are generations to come where hollywood and the foreign press can award the movies that go against the middle american cultural grain, we only have three more years with Bush (thank God) so we have to get it on him while the gettin's good

best actress, drama - gwyneth paltrow, no real reason, thats just a prediction
this is one category where i have not seen ANY of the films nominated; not because they haven't beein, or aren't in theaters, but because I wasn't captivated to see any of them, there was a hint of desire to see A History of Violence, but that faded quickly

best actor, drama - phillip seymour hoffman
if i even have to explain this one, you haven't seen or read anything about Capote, just go watch the trailer, here is a link
its one of those masterful chameleon performances that PSH has made a career out of, and its what won Ray ChJamie Foxx his globes/oscar

best motion picture, comedy/musical - the producers, this vehicle doesn't not win awards

plain and simple

best actress, comedy/musical - reese witherspoon, because you forget you're not watching june carter cash after about 13 seconds

see the last half of the phillip seymour hoffman entry, but replace "its one of those masterful chameleon performances psh has made a career out of" with "its one of those masterful chameleon performances you never expected from the girl from Legally Blonde"

seriously, you forget thats her, amazingly

best actor, comedy/musical - nathan lane, see the entry on the producers
i will probably be upset if johnny depp wins
because it will be a mockery of him losing for Jack Sparrow
i still hate sean penn

best supporting actress - michelle williams, yes, the dawson's creek girl; don't really have a reason why
although the smart money is on the dreamy scarlett johanson

best supporting actor - will ferrell, again, see entry on the producers
a concern with this category, matt damon deserved the nomination more than clooney, in my mind, because he really goes through a lot deeper emotions and adds a lot to the movies value, more than clooney who just moves the story along at times and never really shows us much more than what too many carbs will do

best director - george clooney, see entry on good night and good luck, plus he's already won one award for his direction so far this awards' season

plus, i think the film shows signs of being corralled by someone with a strong hand, but never too dominant

best screenplay - Crash, its one of those disjointed for the sake of being disjointed films that critics love so much

plus its a really touching and moving story

the fact that johansson is in it should be reason enough to see it.

wow - i just watched the trailer for it - it looks NOTHING like a woody allen movie - it looks like a crappy version of Closer.......... it's not even a comedy at all - strictly drama.... has he ever made a non-comedy?

& the only woody allen movie i liked was Zelig - it was hilarious - even though he starred in it!
