good luck w/that. trying to compress 8 gigs into 650 mb, you might be out of luck. now there is a way to compress and split it. google the program called CloneDVD.

awesome i used to have it maybe i can dig it up somewhere

and i know it can be can be done with some divx encoders but fuck if finding the correct settings on most apps is anything but convoluted

its like "ok i want 64kbps.l...wtf.. every 15 frame is key..? fine..why did it reset my audio quality. whatever. ok now why is it encoding uncompressed?"

yeah im actually using that to compress to an iso
then im using nero image drive to read into the divx format for extra special ultra mega uber compression

if it cant be done then how am in posession of over 100 dvd movies compressed into mpg/avi files that can fit onto a standard CD-R

what are these people using?

Don't do a full rip with dvdshrink. Use the re-author mode it is pretty easy. Only strip out the main movie with one audio track and compress that. You can save a lot right off the top by stripping the extras out (depending on the movie of course).

For example:
I just stuck in Black Hawk Down. It is 6,091 MB uncompressed. If I reauthor it and strip out only the main movie it is now 5,187 MB uncompressed (with only English 5.1 audio). However, the lowest custom ratio it will let me choose is 48.3% and the result will still be 2,786 MB.

So that still won't work.

You should know though that other methods like Divx will result in smaller files still because the final output is mpeg-4 (don't quote me on that) and needs a special player. Dvdshrink however dumps out mpeg-2 so it will still be compatible with traditional dvd players.

In my head its the same (roughly) as taking an audio cd and then converting to mp3. When you want to play the mp3's back on a regular old discman you need to convert (inflate, whatever) those files back to .wav's and they grow again. Not as large as the original, but still much larger. So in this analogy dvdshrink is coverting to mp3 then dumping it back out to wav (but not really obviously). It was really meant to be an easy noobish point, click, work type program.

i hate it when people dont do any research at all and then expect you people to do all of their work for the.
ive done a respectable amount of research and read two or three "guides" which are totally useless to anyone except maybe a person who already knows what the fuck he's doing and likely has some experience doing it. In which case he wouldn't need the fucking guide to begin with.

I have little use for burning to several disks that i can watch on my television dvd player. my computer is my entertainment center and actually prefer to use up some of this 300gb storage i will likely never fully occupy with anything but multimedia files

i was hoping to get help from noen in particular because i know he is generally the go-to guy when it comes to this stuff. If he wishes to get upset because im not as learned as he is on the subject thats up to him. but thanks for the link and the insult

ive tried compressing from the disk, extracting disks into single uncompressed files (images as well as mpeg/avi) and compressing to some other format. ive fiddle with quality through framerates and direct stream bits/sec reduction, total pixel reduction (that one almost worked and was set to create a 450mb file from what the bit calculator told me but no matter what util i use i get a message from windows saying "You do not have the rights to encode avi files into a different format" and my question remains. what tool can automate this process for me?

why not just shrink em and burn em on dvdr?

dvdr's are like $0.25 each man, and you get a lot better quality.

divx are usually around 700 either for a movie, or 2 cd's that are 700 each

i know you said 650, but they got 700mb disks now

Just burn 2 dvds per movie, and hope they are readable on the last 3/4s and last long enough for you to afford to buy things you enjoy.

i'll offer up my not-too-researched suggestion ...
I'm not sure your goal for this process (what you want to watch the video on after you rcompress it), but I use a program call pocket dvd http://www.pqdvd.com to copy and shrink my dvd's so i can save and watch them on my palm pilot.

Not sure if it 'automates' the process enough for you, but its a simple interface, select a few options (it suggests some for you at the website, based on your application) and then just start the dvd. It's probably not the best out there, but it works great for movies on my palm pilot.
