An acquaintance of mine was sued and found guilty for shooting a robber in the leg as he was walking away with his television. The poor robber had trouble walking afterward. The "justice" system is pretty messed up sometimes. I hope the Hernandez boys get off the hook.

No, "self defense" is preserving your life and limb. What they did was assault the robber.
The Hernandez's best bet would have been to shoot the guy and be done with it. They're going to get sued.

your acquaintance deserved what he got. he shot someone over a fucking television. People aren't allowed to steal from you, this is true, but you also aren't allowed to take their life if they try.]12/20/2005 1:38:29 AM |

^ I doubt he shot him over the TV (I'm just guessing though). I bet it was more of the principle that he was stealing something from him, something he probably worked hard to protect. If more people that could defend themselves did, I bet it would do more to reduce crime than most laws. 12/20/2005 1:48:06 AM |

^^^Dude, he broke into his house, and stole several items of value. The homeowner came home to find his house ransacked and saw the robber carrying the television across the yard. He shot him in the leg so that he wouldn't escape. Can you read? No one was killed. He was aiming for the leg all along. The robber sued for "pain and suffering." Gay!

^^&^^^There is no federal or state law that gives you the right to defend your property through the use of force.
You DO have the right to forcefully protect yourself or others from death or great injury, but once the threat of death or great injury is gone so is your right to use force.
What do you all not understand?
BTW, I prolly would beat the shit out of someone too if they were trying to rob my house, but I wouldn't go bragging to news reports about it. That's just more ammo for the perp's lawyer.

shooting someone in the leg is a horrible idea, both tactically and legally.
if you have to shoot someone, make sure they never take the stand against you. 12/20/2005 12:03:26 PM |
