Quote :
"Hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has banned Western music from Iran's radio and TV stations, reviving one of the harshest cultural decrees from the early days of 1979 Islamic Revolution. Songs such as George Michael's "Careless Whisper," Eric Clapton's "Rush" and the Eagles' "Hotel California" have regularly accompanied Iranian broadcasts, as do tunes by saxophonist Kenny G.

But the official IRAN Persian daily reported Monday that Ahmadinejad, as head of Iran's Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council, ordered the enactment of an October ruling by the council to ban Western music.

"Blocking indecent and Western music from the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting is required," according to a statement on the council's official Web site.

Ahmadinejad's order means the IRIB must execute the decree and prepare a report on its implementation within six months, according to the newspaper.

They are probably glad if they were being forced to listen to Kenny G. My dad has the Kenny G. Christmas tape and it is absolutely horrendous.

So what? He's the President of Iran. He should be allowed to do whatever the fuck he wants, no questions asked.

^ Unless he defies the rulling religious council in which case the Revolutionary Guard will drag him outside and stone him.

Seriously though, who cares? We don't since Iran has pretty much defied us for the last twenty years. If the Iranians are already listening to so much Western music that the government feels the need to ban it, then the people are only going to chafe under the new law and itch for change. Besides, they're only undermining themselves in the eyes of the European Union, the one organization that's tried to by sympathetic to them.

What a huge surprise! I don't even know why new repressive laws/decrees inside of Iran are even news anymore.

^^ yeah the president only really handles the day-to-day operations of Iran's gov't. The big stinky important decisions are made by Ayatollah Khamenei

anybody know what ever happened with the news story about President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad being one of the hostage takers during the 1979-1980 iran hostage deal ? I recall there being a story with several of the hostages who said this new president was a person in a position of authority during the whole ordeal? Just curious if there was ever any follow up that I missed?

There's an underlying current of salisburyboy-esque conspiracy theorizing on teh L3ft, that Ahmedinejad or however the fuck you spell his name is a plant by the CIA to sufficiently outrage Europe to take the Iranian nuclear threat seriously.

If that's a theory of the l3ft, I haven't heard it. Is that like the salisburyboy-esque theory of the r1ght that the liberals have declared war on Christmas?

Just pointing out patterns when I notice them. You haven't seen a "fair" refutation of Clarke, therefore said refutation doesn't exist. You haven't heard the latest conspiracies among teh L3ft, therefore said conspiracies don't exist.

Think less Debate Tactics, more Common Sense

good for Iran. they don't need that shit. Why would they want to listen to the music from the same people that supplied Saddam with the resources to stock pile enough chemical weapons to kill 1 million iranians? (granted not all of them died from chemical weapons). that and the US navy pretty much sunk almost all of the Irannian surface fleet during the Iraq/Iran war.

America doesn't have the option to leave planet Earth. You, on the other hand, have the option to leave America.

Quote :
"there are a lot of errors in judgement"

This is true. When you're a country that has as much influence, and thus as many foreign policy judgements to make, as the US does, you're bound to have some failures, some of them glaring.

The problem is that some people will claim that our past mistakes mean that we should no longer be allowed to do anything in the rest of the world, ever. This argument is frequently used with Iraq: "OMF, we supported Saddam twenty years ago so this is our fault and so we shouldn't do anything about it!!!11"

Quote :
"current support of facistan, i mean Pakistan."

During the Cold War, support of Pakistan strikes me as being pretty hard to justify -- a link to China isn't worth supporting dictatorship, in my opinion. With the world being what it is today, though, I'm not so sure about our "current support." We need them (read: the government) to fight al-Qaeda, and we've been fairly generous to India as well, with the result that tensions between those countries have eased, if perhaps slightly.

Since when do we "hate the world?"

We didn't cry to the world. We asked for help, and straight up said that people who didn't offer it (at least in certain respects) ran the risk of getting raped.

and what gives you the right to 'demand' help and 'rape' those that don't care to help? and have you read any of the threads on TWW? i mean every other one is fuck this country or fuck that country...hell, look at your attitute towards the rest of the world, so don't tell me, "since when does america hate the world"

and yes, yes you did cry for help...

the very freedoms america claims to fight for is the very freedom they piss on. If a country doesnt do what america tells it to do because they are free to decide for themselves then fuck them, lets invade! how is that freedom? Thats like saying, you are free to chose and do whatever it is you want so long as you chose and do what we tell you to do.

Well, ssjamind, the Hezbolla is not even a recognized terrorist outfit in Europe except for like 3 countries. They have political representation in Lebanon and actually do a lot of good work in lebanon. They are considered turrist by the US only because of their anti-Israel stance.

^not according to what the United States is supposed to stand for. Now they are no different then Iraq. Taking things by force if they are not freely given to them.

for example, invading Iran. Then invading Kuwait.

its the same thing.

Kuwait refused to give in to Iraq. Surprise attack followed.

Iraq refused to give into the US....well you know the rest
Iran refusing to give up their nuclear program...well you know what will come.

Obviously they aren't fighting for democracy, cause Iran is democratic. And since when is it illegal for another country to have a nuclear program, weapons or not? Is the us affraid someones going to pay them back since america is the only nation to use such weapons (atom bomb, not quite nuclear warhead but same consequences on a smaller scale)...if anything the us should not have any kind of WMD since they are too trigger happy.
