WHOPPI was a welfare mom. I think she did fine. I almost was. Pulled myself up by my bootstraps and kept going. I needed a hand up, not a hand out. Never got one (the government was broke at the time) and managed. Whoppi never waited for a meal ticket and neither did I (wish I had her income vs. mine )

That's about the dumbest thing I've read on T-dub in a long time.
In any case, my gripe is more with the fact that for some reason SOME people who are on public assistance seem to think that that means that they can ask me 2384724987243 times if my store takes their EBT cards, even after I've told them each and every time "no, we're not set up for it." As if we're going to one day wake up and say "Oh yeah, now we can take EBT!"
I mean, for fuck's sakes. No means fuckin' no. I just wish people would goddamn listen.12/26/2005 10:25:00 PM |

havent read the thread, but my neighbor is a single mom and the baby's father does not send ANY money. She works her ass off to support that kid, and as soon as she gets a raise, the fucking government raises her childcare costs. She is at the point now where going on welfare is the only way she can make ends meet. It blows my mind how the government works, because as soon as she gets a raise, they make her spend more money instead of giving her some leeway to get off her feet where they wont have to give her any money. IMO, its almost the governments fault for making welfare the way it is. Some people can have a bunch of kids, get on welfare and foodstamps, never work a day in their lives, and live comfortably...but on the other hand, there are people who actually WANT to work and make money for themselves and their kids, but have to get on welfare because the government makes it harder on them to get on their feet.... in North Carolina, welfare recipients are required to work now (at least for the welfare check). it's no longer an entitlement, even though many people still believe they should be able to apply for benefits and not have to work. there are some loopholes, and under certain circumstances people can receive a check and not be required to work, but for the most part, they have to. if they don't, their check terminates. plus, when people ARE working and do receive the check, the amount of the check decreases based on income. by no means is the system perfect, or even good, but i think it's slowly improving.

i really wish the govt would put more $ into child care subsidies (and child support). lack of resources to pay for child care is one of the biggest reasons parents can't keep their jobs IMO.
what also gets me is the number of people receiving SSI that really don't have reason to be - and usually, that is a decent-sized check, and since they're on disability they don't have to work.

I'm not saying welfare means having no job, but, just with any other program, there are people who take advantage of the system who ruin it for the people who really need it and wouldnt use it unless all other options were exhausted. Not all people on welfare are people looking for a handout 12/26/2005 11:12:14 PM |

if the fucking illegal mexicans can fucking find work in America then waaaaaaay more of the people on welfare should be able to. But then again when the government sends you free money for being lazy and having too many kids to support then why not just sit on your ass.12/26/2005 11:16:24 PM |

People who recieve substantial unreported income and still collect welfare and food stamps are a big problem. Mostly its people who get paid under the table or operate ghetto businesses that don't report their earnings.
A good example was that scam artist who sued Michael Jackson. She recieved a $200,000 settlement from Sears based on bogus charges, while still collecting welfare. 12/26/2005 11:18:02 PM |

some illegal immigrants who work definitely take advantage of the system. it's usually women who apply for/receive benefits, and they conveniently don't report that a) they are working and b) the father of the children is in the home AND is working (and making a good bit of $$$)

it really pisses me off that some people I know need the help and can't get it. Then you see these other people rolling up to the welfare office in nice ass SUVs and shit and get lots of help for doing nothing. This one girl I know really needs the help and she barely gets by with the little help they give her, while one of my old neighbors gets a lot of help while her grandparents totally support her (as in pay all of her bills and give her anything she wants)...she just doesn't report it. Seems like people that are actually honest about how much they make/own, etc that need help aren't getting as much help as those who have plenty, but just lie about it. 12/26/2005 11:29:26 PM |

didn't read through the thread and I know this will likely start a spark of controversy, but...
I don't plan to have a child (yes, I know it's not me having the child) until I am doing well enough to support myself, my wife, and a child and still have a good cushion of money. I guess this is an ideal situation... but it's the place I would hope most people would aim for before having a child. 12/27/2005 12:15:52 AM |

^I am in the same boat, but things happen, and it is admirable for people to make do with what happens rather than take the easy way out. In the country they live in, they should at least know that, if they make that decision, they should have some help. 12/27/2005 12:21:04 AM |

^on the same boat this isn't China or somewhere... I would hope you could support your child on your own and not make tax payers do it for you. 12/27/2005 12:22:39 AM |

thats like saying apples=oranges...i'm not saying taxpayers should support you, I'm just saying that, in the country that we live in, if you need temporary help, you should be able to get it, until you dont need help anymore. welfare should be a stepping stone to being independant, rather than a handout to support you.

I knew a girl who got laid off so she got an EBT card worth about $170 a month iirc. Then she got an under the table job that paid better than her last one so we would go to the store and she would buy filet mignon and lamb chops for us to cook. She wasn't a mother though (at the time), so this thread really isn't about her. 12/27/2005 1:51:03 AM |

bushs faith-based inititives will help this problem of child-care if people would stop complaining about supporting "church" things and look at the big picture. the 2 largest childcare providers in the US are the Catholic Church and the Baptist Church.. however, because they're religious organizations, they have a hard time getting subsidies to support lower-income families who need the childcare. just another opinion thrown out there. 12/28/2005 4:19:17 PM |
