I agree 100% with that.

Google is an amazing technology and without it we would be doomed to those other (awful) search engines and thousands of irrelevant results.

With Google I can find almost anything I search for on the first attempt. Years ago with crap like Lycos, AltaVista, WebCrawler, Excite and such most of the pages were irrelevant or ad-triggered.

It wasn't so bad when dogpile came out.

WorldWideWeb or Mosaic were much more important though.

Cheap access to the home is up there as well IMO.

The dotcom boom and bust is far more significant.

I'd also put eBay ahead of Google.

Of the choices the poll gave, perhaps.

What about AOL's rise in the mid 1990s or Netscape's release.

Not to mention this is most likely a non-technical crowd.

Oh, we're going by which is set to each person's default home page?

In that case, about:blank is my choice.

Yahoo! was set as people's home page long before Google. They were the original Google. Search engines rise to and fall from prominence all the time. As technology grows, one eventually winds up out pacing the current hot engine at the time.

eBay completely revolutionized how the internet was used and was extremely important in it's growth.

Google just changed how easy it was to access information, which while a big deal, doesn't really compare to just how big a deal eBay was to the internet.

Before AOL it was Prodigy.

Everyone used to have Prodigy up until maybe AOL 2.5 or 3.0
