how difficult is it to install ram in a laptop, IBM thinkpad specifically. any special tools needed

very very easy. tools you need:

a screwdriver to unscrew the cover over your ram and your hands to snap it in place.

My t42 came with a sheet in the box that explained how to do this. Anyhow, it doesn't get much clearer than this:
