fuck coldplay and whoever likes them. its the most overrated piece of bullsh!t music I've ever heard in my life. i think it just became trendy to like them or something. they sound like sh!t. i hope the lead singer gets merked john lennon style. 1/4/2006 10:03:28 AM |

it's a little sad they became a tad "trendy", but it's not because they tried to. sometimes music is so good it gets swallowed up by MTV without their choice...they didn't change their sound on the 2nd record which means they're stickin' to the roots
I will admit they are the best live band I've ever seen. Seeing them live would probably change your mind. 1/4/2006 11:08:41 AM |

also, i really like their first two albums but haven't been impressed by x&y. 1/4/2006 11:18:01 AM |

Quote : | "Coldplay's latest CD X&Y comes with an insert that discloses all the rules enforced by the DRM they included on the disc. Of course, these rules are only visible after you've paid for the CD and brought it home, and as the disc's rules say, "Except for manufacturing problems, we do not accept product exchange, return or refund," so if you don't like the rules, that's tough.
What are the other rules? Here are some gems: "This CD can't be burnt onto a CD or hard disc, nor can it be converted to an MP3" and "This CD may not play in DVD players, car stereos, portable players, game players, all PCs and Macintosh PCs." Best of all, the insert explains that this is all "in order for you to enjoy a high quality music experience." Now, that's quality. " |

hello bgmims, grow the fuck up.
vinyl--i understand what you mean, but i'd say their "melodic sense" is pretty spot-on. a melody doesn't necessarily have to cater to a hook, per se. their melodies are focused more like jazz heads, appearing and reappearing in their original forms and as variations. and, also, this real talent concept is a bit weird. explain? 1/5/2006 12:25:46 AM |

I don't hear profound songwriting talent when I listen to Coldplay. They make pretty sounds and write decent songs and play them competently, but I personally am not all that interested in those things unless there's some other factor going on. That factor, which is often a gut-check sense of urgency when playing their music live, may very well be present when Coldplay play live, but I've never seen them so all I'm going on is their records.
For the sake of specificity, when I say profound songwriting talent I'm talking about Lennon/McCartney, Holland/Dozier/Holland, Brian Wilson, etc. 1/5/2006 12:43:17 AM |

Pretty fucking lofty standards there. What's wrong with something just being "good"1/5/2006 12:53:08 AM |
vinylbandit All American 48079 Posts user info edit post |
As I've stated before, I don't really give a shit about technical proficiency-type talent when it comes to music. I recognize it, I respect it, but unless a lack of proficiency is standing in the way of the music, I couldn't care less. That's not to say that the two are mutually exclusive...there are plenty of musicians who are outstanding technically but also great composers and/or performers.
So it's out there.
^ Nothing's wrong with being "good". Like I said, Coldplay are very good at making pretty sounds, but I don't hear anything special. "Gimme Some Lovin'" is not a particularly great song, but the vocal delivery and the organ sound are so fantastic, it's one of my favorite recordings.

And if we're on to music, I could care less if you don't like my favorite musicians. They happen to be Maynard James Keenan (regardless of the band he's fronting), Jim Croce, Our Lady Peace, Brand New and of course others.
But anyway, I just ripped on Dave Mathews because I think he gets the same overrated award Coldyplay gets even though I happen to dig the Coldplay style a bit more.
