Family allegiances play a big role. Also, if you grew up in the 80's chances are your a Mets fan while if you grew up in the 90's then you are probably a Yankees fan. In the area it is a lot closer (I'd say pretty damn near 50/50) ratio of Mets fans to Yankee fans then people think nationally.

And yes, everyone is Knicks and Rangers (mostly although the Isles have a SOMEWHAT strong fan base) fans..

I would do the breakdown more like

Mets/Jets (Queens, Long Island, Brooklyn)
Yankees/Giants (SE Conn., Manhattan, Staten Island, Northern NJ, Bronx)

[Edited on January 8, 2006 at 11:14 PM. Reason : Kings County IS Brooklyn by the way ...]

I grew up in NJ

I used to like the Yankees back when they were mediocre at best. Never liked the Knicks, Nets, Devils, or Giants, and I don't like the Yankees now. I'm completely neutral about the Mets, except that they're in the same division as the Braves.

I tried being a Jets fan, but it just never took.

I'm a very big Rangers fan though.

My dad has loved the Yankees and Jets since he was a kid. It just passed on to me. My mom LOVES the Knicks. None of us are big hockey fans though.

Oh and I grew up in northern NJ.

That's pretty much it for me. I was born about a mile from Shea Stadium, and am a Mets fan. However, most of my family up there are Giants fans. I am not. And yes, I do like the Rangers, hate the Yankees, and also hate the Giants.

nym's assessment of the geography is more on point than socrates i would say

i have always thought social class played a large part but that is likely due to the geographical boundaries listed

I thought it would be Jets/Yankees and Giants/Mets since their rivals would match up more (Boston/Philadelphia)

Some became Yankees fans but I'd say MOST followed the teams after they moved and then picked up the Mets (who if you didn't know have orange and blue because of the two teams. Dodger blue and Giants orange. Their logo is a combination of the SF and the cursive B as well). My Grandfather and my Dad (who was 7 when the two moved) were bigtime Brooklyn fans but went to the Mets first game in the Polo Grounds and fell in love with them.

Giants played at the Polo Grounds which was nearly adjacent to Yankee Stadium on the other side of the Harlem River in Harlem. Here is a really cool picture of the two..

Giants originally played in Yankee Stadium. There base of operations is now in New Jersey.

Jets originally played in Shea Stadium. There base of operations is now in Long Island.

I did not know. My alliances at the moment are Yankees and Jets. I don't really care about the NHL or NBA. And I'm a Jets fan b/c it rubbed off from my old roommate

This is probably the most acurate demographic of NYC sports fans :

Quote :
"Mets/Jets (Queens, Long Island, Brooklyn)
Yankees/Giants (SE Conn., Manhattan, Staten Island, Northern NJ, Bronx)"

I was born in Queens, as much of my family was, and the thing is no one was really a big sports fan. So I eventually took, after being a Mets fan, to the Yankees once I got down here. Mainly to piss more southerners off.

Also I took to the Jets b/c i really didnt have a team. So during the 90s I started pulling for them too seeing the Giants are NJ's team.
Whats left of my family, who live on Long Island, follow the Jets/Mets/Islanders, because they hate the city fans Yanks/G-Men/Rangers. The Jets more now b/c of how hard I pull for em.

So it sort of depends where you live in NYC and how close you are to people in your family.

GOD I miss New York. I'm watching the Rangers game and in the last 5 minutes I've heard two CLEALY distinguishable "BULL SHIT" and "ASS HOLE" chants directed at the refs...

Fun stuff...
