bowden started at FSU in 76 and had them in the Orange Bowl by 79. previously FSU was on a 6-year dry spell for bowls.

howard schnellenberger started at Miami in 79 and by 83 they were national champs. prevously Miami hadnt been to a bowl since 1967.

chuck amato started at nc state in 2000 and in 2003 we went to the gator bowl. before amato, our last bowl was...1998.

dont give me this "omg it takes decades sometimes to compete!" stuff. we could be winning the division by now with a good coach who can also recruit. amato does half of that.

its not that cut and dry, black and white, etc.....

coaching is probably 50% of the instant success you're expecting, but there are dozens of other variables.....budgets, facilities, staff, location, cheating, admission of convicts/idiots, scheduling..... the list goooooooes on.

I'd rather us run a mediocre program that might have a shot at a big bowl every few years than run a program like FSU, VT, and Miami where we're constantly answering questions about the programs integrity, and are disappointed with the gator bowl. If Chuck can keep us middle of the road without cheating, I'll be happy, as long as we compete every few years with the likes of the 3 schools I mentioned.

^I also think its a lot harder to "build" a program these days. With all of the media hype, you just cant consistently compete with the powerhouses for top recruits. Yeah, a team might be able to put together a few recruiting classes with "diamonds in the rough" and have a few good seasons, but they usually fall off the map in a few years.

And both of the coaches you mentioned were sitting on Florida, a hotbed for talent.

It took Beamer 9 years to reach 10 wins...and he had something like 2 winning seasons in his first 13. Virginia has twice the H.S. talent of North Carolina.

Way to use selective reasoning

Bill Snyder came to Kansas State in 1989. Previously, they were the worst team in D-1.

By his 8th year, they were in the Fiesta Bowl.

By Amato's 8th year, I'd think we would expect to be consistently winning at least 8 games consistently, ESPECIALLY given the money put into the program. I'm giving him that long.

You invest big, you better get a big payment, thats all im saying.

For Herb, he better shit while he's on the pot or get off.

^the big 12 is not nearly as strong as the acc is....at least right now. Just look at the big 12 championship game. That means there are 5 teams on the other side of that conference that were worse than Colorado, and if I'm not mistaken...K-state is in that division.

I dont give a fuck if texas is the best team in the nation either...every conference has its powerhouses. I think texas and USC would have lost at least one game playing in the ACC or Big 10, just because of more even distribution of tallent...makes it tougher to compete week in and week out.

^um...this was when Nebraska was still a power, and in the North. And KSU got in that year without winning the Big XII.

CFB data warehouse rocks!

is Chuck good for NC State? probably. Is he a BCS-winning coach (unless he, say, went back to FSU)? We'll see.

every year since amato was here 8, 10, or 11 teams didnt win the conference

IF IT WAS THAT FUCKING EASY EVERYONE WOULD DO IT

maybe one of them would lose to 1 team in the big 10, maybe

definitely wouldnt get touched by anyone in the acc, not even close

I definately dont remember back that far, but Nebraska wont the NC back to back right?

Who in the Big 12 was competing with Nebraska at that time?

You cant say that the big 12 has consistently had 3-4 teams capable of going to a BCS every year, and 3-6 more right below them that aren't on the same level, but could beat anyone in the conference on any given day. Hell, the only guaranteed win in the ACC these days is Duke. You could argue that this shows that the top teams arent that strong, but then why are they still ranked so high? None of the experts will agree with that argument.

If their schedule panned out where they played Miami, FSU, VT in the same year like we did last year...with the possibility of playing BC, Clemson, and at the low end NC State and UNC....what would you say then? I say they get upset by one of the top 3, and get scared by Clemson. Its just a lot tougher top to bottom...thats all I'm saying. Its a lot easier to lose if they slip up like texas did against A&M or USC did against Fresno St. I dont think USC would have put that Fresno comeback on VT, Miami, or FSU's defense.

to put things into perspective. fsu duke and unc are the only teams that have won anything with teh exceptions of vt(once) and maryland(once in each) since these coaches have been here.

I hate Herb. I hate Herb because he should be winning national titles left and right. Even though we are in UNC and Duke's backyard, we won a title in 74 and 83! Therefore we should make the final four every year! There are no excuses!

I hate Chuck because we should only improve every year. And after we won 11 games a few years ago, we should never win less than 11 games ever in a single season. Not only do I hate Chuck because he doesnt beat UNC every time, but also because he cant go undefeated against Miami and Clemson and FSU and Ohio State. Since we won a basketball title in 1983, our football program should be elite. We should be able to beat USC or Texas any day of the week.

For football... Texas and USC would RAPE the big 3 even if they played them all in the same season that is ridiculous they are MUCH better than the acc teams. The only way they would not win is if we hurt their starting rb qb and top 2 wr's and then their defenses might score more than any acc offense.
For basketball I hate herb sendek because his style of play is boring, he doesnt motivate people when he speaks, and all around shows little emotion in relation to everyone else that is a couch. And he is a waste of my tuition

I don't think Jim O'brien ever had a stretch of being 1-5 against Umich. He was fired for giving money to a serbian player that never went to ohio state and O'brien sued OSU for firing him. Did you mean to say John Cooper?
