So I want a smart phone, but I'm getting pretty used to the picture and display quality of the Sony Ericsson S710a. I understand I might have to sacrifice a bit on the display quality, but I would like to have something at least as good as the S710a in picture quality. What phones should I consider?

i was checking out the SMT5600 but the vga camera hurts...and it doesn't look like it can play mp3 ring tones either.

do you mean something with a touch screen when you say "smart phone"? If yes, check out the latest HP model. It is about $600 though.

Do you really take that many photos? Buy what you like, but a camera is not high on my list for a phone. For a smartphone the camera becomes less of a selling point.

^^ doesnt have to be touch screen, i'm not sure if i could get used to something with that bulk.

I have the smt5600 and it does play mp3 ringtones (mine is Godzilla by BoC atm).

But like you mentioned the camera does hurt.

The camera is the only thing i really dont like about it.

can someone define a smart phone for me?

^^ thats changing rapidly. the SE K750i has a decent 2mp camera, Samsung has a 2mp one with 2X optical zoom. and those are only the ones here in the US (the asians have much nicer phones cause they like to pay more than the collective cheap ass that is the usa)

Based on those definitions, Sony Ericsson S710a is a smart phone.

true, based on those definitions. the question is how well does the product integrate PIM and phone functions? cell phones have long had contact/phonebooks and calendars of some form, but most are very primitive and lack the full integration that a windows mobile or palm powered phone offer (my definition of a smart phone)

I am confused. Sony Ericsson S710a or even the primitive t68i can be fully synchronized with Microsoft Outlook, including Calendar, Tasks, Notes, emails, address book etc.

IMO, every modern phone is a "Smart Phone" by definition.

in that you have MANY more options and functions with PIM applications running on windows mobile/palm platforms than you do using the typical t68i/s710a etc. for example the ability to create recurring appointments with a calendar on a true smartphone vs not being able to on a t68i/s710a

they can't do a full sync with outlook. many features that are supported in outlook aren't supported on those phones. while the windows mobile/palm phones might not support all functions either, they support many more than the "primitive" phones do.

My S710a can sync all types of appointments with Outlook. I did have a weekly meeting schedule fed into the phone for the last 5 months.

Again, give me examples.

Windows Smartphone is a marketing "gimmick". All "modern" phones are smartphones by definition. If you want me to demonstrate recurring appointments on the Sony Ericsson, I could probably post some screenshots.

SYNC being the key word. can you create recurring appointments with your/my phone? no. this is but one example of the limited functionality.

if you're arguing that your S710a is as full featured PIM-wise as a windows smartphone then your either ignorant or a troll. if you want to continue this conversation, please create a create an additional thread. this thread is for posting phone recommendations.

I am pretty sure my Windows Mobile 2003 PDA didn't have the capability to create recurring appointments either.

But I don't have one to verify it for you right now.

Consider me a troll, but you still cannot mention what PIM features a modern cell phone lacks.

My point is that Windows isn't the only Smart Phone. And just because some phone lacks the capability to program recurring appointments on it, doesn't mean it is any less. As I see it, any cellphone that has data features like email, messaging, downloadable programs etc. is a "Smart Phone".

based on the models you have hitherto posted, you consider Windows Mobile as the only Smart Phone OS. That is where I beg to differ.

no that's not your point gargs. i've mentioned the palm platform at least 3 times in this thread. hitherto, you're a troll.

please something relevant or get out of my thread.

Activesync is big for me when talking "smartphone". I have a Moto MPX220 for now, it has activesync and works well with my corporate exchange server. I've used the Treo650 which also has activesync, I am just not a big fan of the PALM OS. My next smartphone will be a Motorola Q running Windows Mobile 5.0, but it's not out yet. YOu can get a Treo700w from Verizon today, but I'm not a fan of Verizon.

i wish the smartphone could sync notes from outlook
the smartphonenotes software will do it, but i think it should be a built in feature. maybe 5.0 will have this

^^ Yeah I agree, Motorolla phone tools fucked up my outlook phonebook pretty badly once, so i try to stick to activesync (though SE sync works well)

^ as gargs so trollingly pointed out earlier, there is no standard smartphone. my s710a does it, and other phones ive had before did it. varies by phone.
