this thread has probably been done before, but I don't have the search option, if you can point me in the directions of anywhere that isn't Sugar Mtn. that I could potentially do as a spur of the moment trip this weekend, please post all ideas, websites etc. I need all the help I can get last minute. I have some friends coming in from Boston. 1/10/2006 12:11:28 AM |

if you have friends coming in from boston
they're probably used to real mountains up north
anywhere you take them down here will suck, excluding possibly west virginia
and why would they bring their gear?
nice dig at the end there alias 1/10/2006 12:24:29 AM |

No one is bringing shit....they want to go see the NC Mountains (I figured i'd rent a cabin)...and potentially ski, renting equipment is not that expensive. Stop being so weird. I'm asking a legitimate question here, the only time i've been to the mountains of NC was when we went to GSM for a few days when I first moved here.
[Edited on January 10, 2006 at 12:44 AM. Reason : Where did I say anything about them coming down here with gear? I'm trying to entertain.] 1/10/2006 12:43:57 AM |

^ He does have a point. Anyone coming down from Boston that has done any skiing up there will be disappointed with the quality of mountain down here. that said, you may want to check out http://www.skisoutheast.com for NC and southeast skiing.

i assumed that if you're willing to put a ski trip together with such quickness, it would probably be because these people are avid skiers avid skiers aren't going to want rented equipment
my second reply was an actual legitimate response, for the hell of it

Im tryin to even if I end up watching it at snowshoe then stayin the night in a shitty motel or something. Dont really feel like driving back then trying to watch it after all the festivities through out the weekend. 1/10/2006 1:57:52 PM |

I gotta agree with everyone else is saying about the crappy skiing in NC, but I used to go to Boone when I was out on breaks and had the whole spending time with the fam obligations(which knocked out an extended trip to WV). I like Hawknest the best due to the lack of idiots from places south of NC and they have a twilight skiing, which works out pretty smooth once the day sessions is over. Usually there's only about 50 people out at night. With the weather, conditions probably won't be so great, but at least you'll be able to get some turns in. 1/10/2006 3:41:33 PM |

In all honestly, every where in NC besides Sugar, which sucks slightly less, sucks donkey balls. Your best bet is to go up to VA or WV and go to Winterplace, Snowshoe, or Massanutten. Winterplace and Massanutten are both only about 4 hours away and I've made several weekends trips there before. Have fun. 1/10/2006 4:51:54 PM |

Jeepxj420, we're staying in a condo that sleeps 8 in the village. Its right by all the new work they've been doing and I believe its a very short distance from the indoor/outdoor pool (score!).
Should be a good time. We were up for that Jose Cuervo weekend last year too.
We're not staying for the Superbowl. I don't want to take that monday off, and a 470 mile drive back to nyc means after a full day of skiing I'm gonna get home pretty fucking late 1/11/2006 1:36:21 PM |

Not really. This year is shaping up exactly like last year. A decent week or so around the christmas time frame, and then not another good week until mid/late Feb.

Wintergreen is a great place to go, it's in VA or West VA, I don't remember which. But it has a lot of runs, and good ones compared to most of the skiing they have around here. 1/11/2006 4:06:41 PM |

I'll let you know. I'm going skiing in snowshoe more to have a good time with my frat bros from back in college. Most of us live far apart now so its a chance to see them. As far as being up here and skiing, yes I know there's better around. I'm going to the Catskills next weekend, and Vermont at least once or twice.1/11/2006 6:07:13 PM |

Sorry guys-false information!
I was just told we're going the 2nd Jose Cuervo Weekend-the one that's the 10th-12th! This whole time I thought we were going the first weekend.
Oh, I have a question-Has anyone taken the Advanced Lessons or "Super Group Lessons" as Snowshoe calls them? I took the beginner lessons and passed really well and early. But I tried a blue slope and ended up getting pissed/frustrated and walking down. I think I need the advanced lessons, but I am wondering if they're too advanced for me... Don't get me wrong-I CAN ski, just need some brushing up really.

^^I believe its around 300 miles from Raleigh, but takes around 6 hours. The best way to get up there is to take 40 to Greensboro then hop on 220. I don't recall excactly what roads after that, but they get increasingly twisty
^Yes, I think you should take that "Advanced" lesson. It can't be that advanced, b/c advanced skiers don't take lessons. If you can't handle a blue then you need some work, take the lesson

^Thanks! Then it's DEFINITELY gonna be a lesson! And hope I don't get in the process! It says online that it's for people who want to do blue and black slopes! I am a thrill seeker, and am not really afraid of anything, but I get really nervous when I go fast because I don't feel in control-and nervous skiiers have accidents. 1/29/2006 1:40:27 PM |
