For academic reasons.

Kudos to GT for benching a guy who was getting it done on the court, but not the classroom.
Quote : | "Tarver fails to meet Georgia Tech standard
ATLANTA -- Georgia Tech forward Theodis Tarver was declared academically ineligible by the school, ending his college career.
He was eligible by NCAA standards but did not meet the school's academic requirements, coach Paul Hewitt said. Tarver may remain in school.
The 6-foot-9 senior had started the previous six games before Tuesday night's game against Centenary. His move into the lineup coinciding with a 5-1 run by the Yellow Jackets. He was averaging 4.1 points and 3.2 rebounds.
Tarver did not accompany the team to Shreveport, La., for what was to be a homecoming game. Tarver is from Monroe, about 90 miles away, and at least 50 family members and friends had been expected to attend.
Tarver dislocated his kneecap as a sophomore, struggled through his junior season but finally seemed to be reaching his potential. In his final game Sunday, an upset of then-No. 11 Boston College, Tarver tied his career high by playing 25 minutes. He had eight points, six rebounds, two blocks and two assists in the 60-58 victory.
His departure will place a bigger burden on sophomore forwards Ra'Sean Dickey and Jeremis Smith, and most likely lead to more playing time for freshman center Alade Aminu." |

GT deserves credit for setting higher standards for their athletes. If I was a GT fan though, I'd probably be pissed. 1/10/2006 3:52:42 PM |

That is ridiculous. School standards should equal NCAA standards. The NCAA has so many ridiculous rules that causes players to miss games (Felton last year; Billy Edelin a few years back; etc, etc) that kids shouldn't have to worry about differing school rules if they meet all the NCAA reqs..
Just my opinion..
EDIT: I know that sounds ridiculous but it should either be uniform throughout or be up to each individual school..

GT is trying to make up for last year when they had 41 players that were declared ineligible in multiple sports.... That's my humble opinion.... 1/10/2006 3:58:52 PM |

He was aware of the academic standards set by Gerogia Tech when he accepted the full ride - if he wanted lower standards there is Big East basketball, he wouldn't be the first to go from GT to UCONN.
He managed to meet those standards for the better part of 7 semesters and I applaud Georgia Tech for having higher standards to play a sport. It sounds like he will be able to finish his degree. 1/10/2006 3:59:04 PM |

i think its BS that if a kid if kicked off the team for any reason, he gets to keep his scholarship. pro-rate that shit and make him pay the balance. money for sport - sport = bullshit

Marcus Williams was kicked off the team for a semester for the same reason 2 years ago.

Uh, yea. And it had NOTHING to do with academics..
Why does UConn end up being in EVERY thread I post in about bball.. come on. Start a 'UConn bashing' thread if you want to do that every damn time I post..

When the fuck did GT become a school with higher academic standards?
Wasnt it just this summer that some kids got kicked off the football team for violating NCAA policies?....and a number of them were grade related? 1/10/2006 4:13:14 PM |

Yes. That is why this is fucked up. He is being made an example of and it sucks.. unless the higher standards are part of the NCAA sanctions.. which could be the case. 1/10/2006 4:14:19 PM |

That was for not meeting NCAA standards. He also steals laptops, not the smartest cookie.
And why did Ed Nelson transfer?

I usually don't post much after work unless a game is on or something but Nelson gave 'closer to family' (Boston) as a reason in every article I've found..
seriously. If you want to troll me about UConn in every thread please make a 'UConn sucks' or 'UConn is dirty' thread. Of course I'll answer questions if you ask about them because I'm argumentative but no one else wants to read about them every fucking college thread.. 1/10/2006 5:56:09 PM |
