what possible reason would you want to put a slow, expensive drive in a computer that could easily handle a cheap, fast, big drive?

yeah...i guess...but you can get 160gb drives on sale for something like $30, while you still have to pay $10+ for the mounting kit/converter...

unfortunately, you can't put the 160gb drive back into the laptop after transferring files

nor can you transfer from the 160gb drive the files on the laptop drive

so really if you were trying to transfer files from a laptop drive, buying a 30$ 160gb hd would be completely and totally fucking useless. you are an idiot, AND that is one of the least informed "helpful suggestions" I've ever had the displeasure of tripping over in this dank pit of misinformation. without doubt you will excel in life only by keeping your mouth shut and nurturing the doubt of your capability, because with its death comes absolute knowledge of your ineptitude.

^^ here's why your response was not only stupid, but why you're a douche to boot:

1.) ncsuapex never once stated why he wanted to do this...he COULD be transferring files, or he could be looking to replace a desktop hd or he could just being doing it for the hell of it...therefore, your assumption that he is transferring files is only that - an assumption (whether it's true or not is beyond the point, since at the time of my post he had not said that that is what he wanted it for), and so your assinine response was exactly that - assinine and a prime example of douchebaggery...stfu, kthx

2.) let's say that you're right in you assumptions that he wants only wants to transfer files...if so, then that kit he listed is about the dumbest way to do it, especially when you can buy one of these for about $10 more (and considering it's infinitely more useful, only a complete buffoon would buy a mounting kit if their only goal was the transfer files)

Just set up a Home office network if u want to transfer files or data. If u are looking to replace the hd i would suggest getting a big HD.

ok ok ok time to end the speculation so we can get down to some real "support"

I have a laptop with a 20gb HD. I plan on using the laptop for a project that will not require it's HD. I have a linux box with a small 6GB HD and I have all my MP3s(11gb worth) on my XP machine. For some reason my samba mounts from my Linux machine to my XP machine dies and I lose my shoutcast stream. I want to put this laptop HD in my Linux machine and copy all my MP3s over so I don't have to worry about figuring out why my samba connection dies, I've been messing with it for about 6 months and I can't figure out why it loses the connection. The Linux box won't take a HD bigger than 30 gb or at least I can't figure out how to hack it to make it take a bigger HD. Plus I don't want to have to buy a new HD when I have a perfectly good 20 GB HD that I don't have any other use for...

make sense??


I am perfectly fine with paying 10 bucks for the cable/mount to put this HD into my Linux machine.

ncsuapex, I think you got the right item. I have bought probably 5 of these (keep losing em) off ebay for like $3.00 each. Shipping is always more than the device itself.

I get tons of laptops in with dead hard drives, or drives that need to be reloaded. I have two removable ide drive trays in my hard drive recovery pc and with the little converter can have an entire laptop hard drive backed up to my PC's hard drive in like 15 minutes. Through the laptop drive back in the laptop and then reload.

If you have two it is great for upgrading laptop hard drives. Upgraded my 20 gig to a 80 gig in like 15 minutes. Copied from one laptop drive to the other and then I was back in business.

So many reasons for these devices, well unless your time isn't worth anything, you can always do it some other way... but time is money! a whole lot more money than a $3.00 converter.

I found one at anythingpc for 6.99. And it does what I need. I'm not really using it to upgrade hard drives, but I know that I can if I ever have to. I just wanted to make use of a 20gb hard drive that I had in a laptop that I'm going to be using for a project that doesn't require a hard drive. The 7 bucks I spent on this converter is cheaper than any 20 GB HD i've found.

Ive already tested in on my XP machine and it works, for some reason I cant get my Linux box to recognize the HD but that's a different problem.
