They have not beat a single sure fire NCAA tourny team home or away like 15 games in to the season
shows how meaningless the polls are this time of the year 1/17/2006 9:32:19 PM |

When will you realize the polls really dont mean shit. All that really matters is how you do in the tourney. 1/17/2006 9:47:36 PM |

^ Yeh, you can win only one game but come tournament time you won't lose any. Meaning you damn better do well in the regular season to get into the tournament.

I think it shows how down college basketball is this year. Carolina, BC, Louisville are all ranked because there really aren't better teams to take their spots. 1/17/2006 10:24:42 PM |

well its pretty obvious that teams that start out ranked have a better shot at the tourney just because they have more room for error1/17/2006 10:26:25 PM |

^how? rankings have almost nothing to do with getting into the tourney or not, quality wins and bad losses do. 1/17/2006 10:41:58 PM |

^^^^I bet LSU and Xavier beg to differ. There are probably 40+ teams better than Louisville.

I agree on Xavier. Sean Miller has those boys playing well. They might beat GW for the A-10 title. 1/17/2006 10:50:27 PM |

you really think the committee doesn't look at rankings? i know rpi, sos, etc. are bigger factors, but if a team is preseason top 10, and has some bad losses but a few mediocre wins, they'll get in above possibly more qualified teams simply because they are ranked. besides, has a top 25 team EVER been excluded?1/17/2006 10:53:38 PM |

Quote : | "I learned this last week while conducting a mini-crash course of my own (I admittedly tuned out for a couple of weeks during the peak of bowl season). If I had relied on only the Jan. 9 Associated Press and Coaches' polls to form my perception of the season-to-date, I would have been duped into believing ...
• That an extremely young Louisville team, having lost its only three big games (Kentucky, Villanova and Pittsburgh) while scoring one semi-meaningful victory (Miami), is somehow a top-10 team (at one point it was ranked high as fourth). Even the Cardinals' coach finds that preposterous. "I'm trying to be realistic, but no one else is," said Rick Pitino. "I don't know why we were ranked so high."
• That Boston College (No. 14 in the coaches' poll), which dropped its first three ACC games before finally eking one out Saturday against Florida State, was somehow ranked higher in the coaches' poll than No. 23 West Virginia, which had won 10 straight, including a road win on Jan. 8 against previously unbeaten Villanova." |

Top 25 teams have been left out of the NCAA Tournament. I think the tournament selection committee does a really good job of actually watching basketball games throughout the year, so they know who is really deserving and who is over ranked.
I think in addition to nd a few years ago, a ranked Utah St. team was left out of the tournament despite having a great record but not winning the Big West Tournament. 1/18/2006 9:25:16 AM |

For the last two years, ND has been the only major-conference team to have a 9-7 or better conference record and fail to make the tournament.
Don't think they've been ranked in either season, though.
