it's sad b/c Bilas is usually pretty fair, but even during half time he didn't really give us any credit. also why must Stuart Scott mention Tarheel, UNC, Carolina, etc. when a former UNC player now in the NBA touches the ball in a highlight. it could even be a video of say Rasheed Wallace caught cheating on his wife and he'd have to mention he's a Tarheel. also i thought it was kind of messed up that he didn't mention Winston-Salem when he mentioned all the towns on "Tobacco Road" aka I-40.

i was fairly happy with the highlight. i didn't like how Scott said that the Tobacco road schools have accounted for 6 titles in 23 years. it left out UNC's 82' championship, which was a little surprising, and he could have extended it to account for State's 74' championship.
8 championships in 32 years. so the state of North Carolina has a 25% chance of winning a National Championship.

in the whole scheme of things, wake isn't shit
they had a good run in the 90's with rogers, childress, duncan, et al. but they don't have anything to show for it
the main emphasis of his little intro was history and national championships, of which wake has none 1/19/2006 12:40:41 AM |

The ACC has won 3 of the last 6 national championships. (aka of all the 'ships this century)
not to mention Duke and State both have a GREAT shot at one for this year... seriously how many teams are not beatable to state and duke in a neutral setting?
Duke could beat anyone, and on any given night State is just as good as long as we can FINISH. 1/19/2006 12:57:51 AM |

It's easy to laugh at the thought of State actually having a shot at the national championship... trust me I know, I've dealt with the past 15 years just like you probably have.
But before you go just laughing it off, give me a real reason we dont have just as good if not a better shot than any other team this season?
I mean come on, we just gave the best team in the country by far a run for their money, until it fell apart in the last 5 minutes. We have a much better shot this year than anyone thought we did in 1983, even if we dont have Jimmy V. 1/19/2006 1:11:46 AM |

But in reality that was AT Duke and AT UNC. The Iowa game should just be scrapped because both the teams played about the sloppiest game ever, and Iowa somehow pulled it out.

^^ Which is hilarious, 'cause you're saying those 14 wins "don't count".
How quickly we forget the great win vs. ND, the win on the road against some BIASED refs @ Alabama, and the smattering we laid on GW (we're still their only loss on the season).

Maybe you missed the memo, but Carolina was FAVORED (even in Vegas lines) over us in that game. It didn't mean as much nationally as it did to NCSU fans personally.
And who else gave Duke a serious run for their money (other than VT when Duke had an off night) this season? It's EXPECTED that one will lose to Duke so no one really cares nationally.
And the fact that you said we didn't "show up" is absolutely retarded. Maybe we didn't "finish" well in those 2 games, but you better believe they showed up. 1/19/2006 1:21:03 AM |

And there you have a point. But the Tourney is a long ways away, and who would've thought our 21-14 squad from last year would've made it the final 16 teams in the nation?
We can learn a lot in the meantime. Last season we couldn't even beat FSU at home, let alone "finish" a tough game. If all we hafta do is learn how to play in the final 4 minutes, and we already have the other 36 covered, I'm fine w/ that. 1/19/2006 1:24:22 AM |

I was there... it was incredibly loud, much louder than during any game at the RBC center so far this year, and I've been to them all.
That said we wont have that tough of a crowd in the tourny. We DO have a problem finishing games, but also note one thing: Herb's teams ususally end the season at their strongest point. 1/19/2006 1:33:31 AM |

i think loud is relative to where you may sit. if you're down low in or close to the floor, it can seem louder than if you were up higher. i know that when i went to the away football games at VT and Clemson, i thought it was loud, but not near the noise level of the 2002 FSU game. of course i was dead in the middle of the student section in section 8 for that game though. i was sitting up high though during both away games, so the seats closer to the field might have seemed louder. seats at the top of an arena or stadium allow you to judge sound level based on the resulting echo, while the floor and field level seats allow you to judge based on just sheer ambient noise, which might be the closest to what the players are feeling. 1/19/2006 1:43:32 AM |

Only problem with that is I was 4 rows from the top at UNC, and right behind State's bench all season at RBC. I do agree it's relative to where you are sitting, but at the end of the UNC game this year I couldnt yell loud enough to my friend sitting next to me.
I'm not tryin to make this about which is louder cuz the RBC can get plenty loud (mainly at the end when the fans actually cheer) but it's a big factor for the players in a loud, hostile environment.1/19/2006 1:46:50 AM |

how is the student seating arranged in the Dean Dome? the dean dome has some pretty good acoustics if i remember correctly. 1/19/2006 1:51:00 AM |
jtmartin All American 4116 Posts user info edit post |
yeah i believe that has a lot to do with it. student seating is really everywhere except the good seats. They have one endzone that is maybe 10 rows of students, several second level sections are students, and some of the lower level corner seats. Basically, pick out the seats people wanted the least and those are their student seats. I was at the edge of one of the student sections.
The acoustics for the band were so good i thought they were mic-ed, but apparently not. The seats are more vertical and the arena is shorter lengthwise, so most of the seats are better.
I say all of this not because I like UNC - in fact I HATE them, but I jealous their arena is their own devoted to bball and not a multiplex shared by everyone and their mom 1/19/2006 1:57:45 AM |
Brass Monkey All American 13560 Posts user info edit post |
i was disappointed the first time i walked up to the Dean Dome. i was expecting this mammoth structure, b/c i was used to the RBC Center, and thought that it would be bigger since it had more seats. boy was i ever wrong. i'm not saying it isn't big, just that it seems smaller than what you'd think it would be. the RBC Center definitely is the nicer building, and has the better student seating arrangement. i like how the far end (the one farther from the main entrance, aka the band side) is just a wall of students. i kind of wish they'd find a way to fill in the corners that aren't used as the player tunnels though. it'd trap in more noise and increase the capacity as well. 1/19/2006 2:06:43 AM |
jtmartin All American 4116 Posts user info edit post |
i agree. I think also if they moved the band to one corner it would help the music project out better, instead of just to the opposite side
i think the dean dome looked big to me because I was at the very very top, so I could see the whole thing around me. Ive sat in the last row at the RBC but all the rafters and catwalks blocked my view of most the other top sections across from me and such
the RBC has the potential to be one of the most difficult places to play.. but most of the fans wait until the end of the game to really really get into the game, and most people wait until 5 minutes after the game starts to find their seats 1/19/2006 2:10:23 AM |

that's always been a pet peeve of mine. like getting there early enough to see the player intros is that difficult. getting there early before the tip and cheering for the players as they're introduced shows good fan support.1/19/2006 2:14:54 AM |
jtmartin All American 4116 Posts user info edit post |
definately.
I do blame part of this on the RBC staff. They really could do a much better job with setting the environment - less ads, more music that pumps up the crowd, more interactive stuff before the game begins to encourage people to arrive earlier.
I hate how the "bring em out" video plays, then we wait 5 minutes, then they actually "bring em out" 1/19/2006 2:23:00 AM |

Did you not watch the Ga Tech game, or the Alabama game, where we DID finish it off?
You can't expect that every game that you are tied in with like 3 minutes to go to win. You win some you lose some. So we've dropped two close ones near the end. It happens. Especially against Top 25 ACC rivals on the road.
Jesus, our increasingly lowered expectations have blinded some of you. 1/19/2006 9:56:07 AM |
