Welp, I got my new mobo today and am working on putting this shit together. I place the heat sink for measurement purposes and damned if the fucker doesn't block one of the memory slots. Naturally, it blocks the first one in the array instead of the last one. Turning the heat sink the other direction bends capacitors, so that is a no-go as well
As such, I can't utilize the dual channel memory, because you allegedly have to use the green slots first. How big of a performance hit am I going to take because of this? Can I use the purple slots, instead, even the mobo guide doesn't say I can? 1/19/2006 7:34:22 PM |

just try it out...it's not going to explode if you put them into the wrong slot... 1/19/2006 7:46:01 PM |

You're gonna be better off running them in dual channel at a lower voltage/rate (thus not needing the sinks) than you will be in single channel at higher frequency/voltage and needing the sinks. 1/19/2006 8:01:03 PM |

oh, i think i was a bit misleading. the heat sink in question is for the cpu. can't go w/out that 1/19/2006 8:21:18 PM |

Then you'd be better off running it dual channel. Maybe a different heatsink? What kind is it that's blocking it? 1/20/2006 3:04:51 AM |

If you use the stock heatsink that come with the cpu then you shouldn't have a problem, it's pretty low profile. And unless you're planning on doing some serious overclocking then it should be more than enough to keep you cool. 1/20/2006 6:38:43 AM |

stock cooling on 64-bit procs.. especially winchester and venice cores.. is more than enough... even with a substantial overclock. 1/20/2006 7:49:48 AM |

But... but then the computer won't be as riced out!
Honestly though what kind of screwed up heatsink do you have that it's blocking your memory slots. Doesn't sound very well designed. 1/20/2006 8:07:37 AM |

^^ either a massive heatsink.. or a really bad mobo design. 1/20/2006 8:40:36 AM |
