well its definitely not going to be my main computer

just something to take to class, the library, etc.

it won't be used for anything more than some light typing and surfing

^What he said. For what you pay, the hardware specs on Macs are pathetic. And I used to think OS X was the shit, until I found Suse Linux. Suse/KDE > OS X.

800 MHz isn't bad for a G3 processor. I'm using a 400 MHz iMac right now with Tiger and can run Photoshop, Safari and iTunes all at the same time with no problem.

You'd probably be able to find one with an airport card that isn't much more expensive, though.

i dunno, i've seen worse laptops sell for more

but you might get a better deal on a 12 in. powerbook

either way, i think it's a good computer... esp. if you're not gonna be using it for anything serious.

I also have a PowerBook.

Screen rash is probably a scratch on the screen or something.

You need to be careful about the G3 ibooks. There was a series of ibooks that had bad, bad graphics problems. See the link on the front of Apple's site if the recall is still on.

That said, I am a big Apple fan and owned a G3 ibook with no problems at all. It wasn't that slow and you won't notice the speed for Word/Excel and internet browsing.

Look for one with the airport card already installed. Actually, look for one with Airport Extreme (b/g). Apple doesn't make the standard airport card anymore.

if you want a 12" ultralight, the ibm/lenovo X series ultralights and tablets are where it's at. Sure they're more expensive, but you can get them through the bookstore for a discount.

if you want apple, don't get some used ibook off ebay with a scuffed up screen. ibooks aren't THAT expensive new, and you can get education discounts on them too (no real verification required if you do it right)

for that cheap though... it's really hard to find something that light and easy to just get going. anyways, you might want to wait for intel chips to start appearing in the ibooks as well, since the g4 ibooks will start appearing on ebay in droves as alot of people go jump on the newest apple thing.

Jesus, don't buy apple, and don't do "buy it nows", you noob. Get a Toshiba or Sony, if you want something nice.

sony's and toshiba's laptops range from getting really really shitty reviews to really good reviews. there are some REALLY crappy sony laptops out there that are priced about as high as apple's stuff. if you buy a sony laptop make sure you look for reviews for that particular model. though you should do this for any brand, sony's lines are espescially inconsistent.

but yeah, brands just aren't that consistent in general though, so you really do need to look into the particular model/series. some apple models had defects severe enough to trigger class-action lawsuits and/or recalls. some dell model lines have defects that the company has aknowledged and stated they will not fix (static on the mic port on one of their ultralights), etc. so whoever it is, brand isn't as much of an assurance as some fanboys will lead you to beleive.

but yeah, as of late sony has had a lot of good midrange laptops that compete quite well in terms of performance/price as well as features/price.

you are an idiot.

Screen "rash" means the screen has fucking scratches/splotches and dents in it. Hence why there are no pictures of the screen. In other words, he dropped the fucking thing, cracked the case, and fucked up the LCD.

It's going to be annoying as fuck. And the whole display could go at any moment.

Yeah... a "hairline crack" but no picture of that or the minor screen rash/pitting.

I would have passed, or asked for pictures of the damage beforehand.

it'll be fairly accurate (give or take 20 minutes) if the battery is still good, and if you're checking it after you've used it for a few minutes so it can extrapolate from useage.

ahhhhhh, silly g3's. well dvd burners are like 130 if you want the firewire drives with lightscribe at the bookstore... so at the bookstore you could say 10.4 is 200 if you don't have a dvd drive.

seriously though, they can order the cd version. they don't carry it in stock though.

You can probably find the cd version on ebay or just order it through Apple. I'm pretty sure that the cd version is $69 from them too.
