Looks like the sweeper tried to trap him offsides but the pass was made right before he was actually past the last defender. Damn close, but nice move. 1/24/2006 1:38:37 AM |

(this is coming from a guy who played soccer for 14-15 seasons)
I always knew it as the ball, once it crossed the defender, "became" the offsides line, but from the looks of that clip, the ball *reaches* the offensive man instead of him running with it, and he was well ahead of the defender... I just don't understand it. 1/24/2006 1:40:44 AM |

No, if you pause it around :08 you can see that he passes the defender just after the ball is kicked which makes him not offsides. 1/24/2006 1:42:33 AM |

^^Oh, so the offensive man has to be at or behind the defender at the moment the ball is kicked? 1/24/2006 1:44:24 AM |

I always understood the rule from when I played as the last defender was the offsides line...I've never heard anything about the ball designating offsides.
Once the ball is kicked though, I think anything is fair game as long as your offensive player was on sides before the ball was kicked.
I think with that play though, the defender saw the forward cherry picking and tried to trap him by running ahead of him before the pass was made, and the pass was made just before the forward was offsides, so its a clean play.
I dont know though, I havent played soccer in 5 years, but I did play for about 10 years myself. 1/24/2006 1:45:33 AM |

^^ Yeah, wolf is correct. I've played all my life and reffed a few years, the second the ball goes in the air the offense can pass the last defender and not be offsides. 1/24/2006 1:50:43 AM |

yeah, it looked like they tried to run the trap on him, and the sweeper broke a second to late. I played keeper in highschool and we ran the trap the first half of the season....of course after we stopped using it we only gave up one goal. Most of the time you think you have them off, but the refs see it other wise 1/24/2006 1:51:10 AM |

He wasn't offsides because when the ball was played, he was even with the defender, or so it appears... As long as your torso is even with the last defender when the ball is played, you are fine...
I have reffed soccer for about 8 years and played my whole life, so I would know... 1/24/2006 9:01:19 AM |
