ok, people always were like "you should watch this neon show" and i ignored them, then it came on adult swim and at first look it was pretty unimpressive.
but somehow i end up watching it every week and its pretty interesting. i cant figure out the back story though, and dont want to google it and end up spoiling the rest of the series like i did with fullmetal. 1/26/2006 11:16:22 PM |

it's because the japanese have a western fetish, so they throw in all this random biblical stuff because it looks uber-cool to your average Japanese person.
you use that Zaino shit, right?

I downloaded the entire series (29 episodes) and watched them all over the span of 2 days (in japanese, with English subtitles).

Ummm.... the NGE english dub is the most horrible shit on the planet. It's by far the worst dubbing I've ever heard. If you plan to watch NGE, don't do it with English audio, it's just pathetic. 1/27/2006 1:03:27 AM |

Praise be to skokiaan for the creation of this thread.
I've seen most of the eps with english dub and then I downloaded all the eps in japanese with english subtitles (it was all I could find at the time). I use to think that people who were all like "sub is so much better than dub" were being snooty elitist motherfuckers. However, I have been humbled and corrected after watching the subs. The hell if I know how accurate the translations were, but the voice acting is so much better. I think the japanese voice actors do all of the characters so much more justice, nevermind that they can also actually ACT.
But anyways, ever since I watched this show, I have been a HUGE fan of it. I more or less ignore the religious references, but I absolutely loved the philisophy of NGE. I found the whole "we are all fundamentally separated and this causes us pain, but to come together also causes pain" thing to be deeply profound. I don't pretend that NGE was the first anime/show/whatever in history to present these philisophical arguments, but it is the first anime I have seen that did. And there are so many times that I can relate with Shinji that I have to wonder if I would have turned out exactly like him had my father been a complete asshole.
The thing I really love about NGE, though, is how multi-faceted and ambiguous its interpretation can be. You can look at it literally as a giant robot/alien sci-fi action flick, you can look at it on a psychological level and examine the weaknesses and insecurities of each character, you can look at it on a religious level (obviously), you can look at it on a philisophical level and the meaning of the AT Field, you can look at it from a sexual level (Freudian, even!), etc. There's just so many ways to look at it, and none of them are necessarily "wrong," but how you look at the show changes how you see it overall, which totally blew my fragile little mind. I can go back and watch it again, and I guarantee you that I'll find something new that I completely missed before.
If anybody ever wants to discuss NGE with me, I'm all for it. I don't pretend to even approach the level of expert on this series, but I'm always interested in hearing people's thoughts and reactions, as well as sharing some of my own.

^^In the NGE universe, the Second Impact was explained by the impact of a small meteor moving at 10% the speed or light or so (don't remember the exact number given, this is off the top of my head). The impact was in Antarctica, and not only resulted in the melting of the polar ice caps and massive global flooding, it also shifted the earth on its axis slightly, forever altering the Earth's climate, hence the disappearance of seasons and the perpetual summer in Japan. This explanation, however, was propaganda that was forwarded by NERV and the UN to cover up the truth. If you do not want a slight spoiler, read no further.
In truth, Second Impact was initiated by the awakening of the "Giant of Light," aka Adam, the first Angel. I'm not sure of exact dates, but it began when the Katsuragi expedition team in Antarctica discovered the then-dormant Adam. The events that unfold are not entirely clear to me nor are they fully explained, but it seems as though the team used the Lance of Longinus, the only weapon that can penetrate an AT Field, to penetrate Adam's protective AT Field and introduce human DNA into him. The purpose of all of this was to "reduce" Adam, ie, water down his abilities and make him less of a threat, and in the process reduce him to an embryonic state, and I guess through some AT Field-related technobabble he unleashed massive amounts of energy that effectively caused the environmental devastation that we see in the series.. Apparently, if Adam was not reduced, he would have awakened at a later date and caused much worse devastation, and so causing him to awaken prematurely would result in less damage in the future.
I should also add that Ikari Gendo, Shinji's father, was also present at the Katsuragi expedition, but conveniently fled the day before Adam was awakened. It is known that Gendo was working with/for a group called SEELE, which was secretly in control of the UN. While there is no conclusive canon evidence that I know of, it is believed that SEELE knew full and well what would happen when Adam awakened, and may have sent Gendo to ensure that it occurred. This is supported by the fact that the reduction of Adam and procurement of his embryonic self was an important part of SEELE's plans for something called the Human Complementation Project (sometimes called the Human Instrumentality Project). For more details about HCP, pm me. 1/27/2006 8:38:57 AM |

^^^^ SEELE was relying on a timeline predetermined by the Dead Sea Scrolls. Second Impact was part of those predictions.
And yes, the English dub is extremely bad. They completely and utterly butcher the original intonations, which changes the characters considerably. I think that if I had watched the English dub first, I would hate this show, because it wouldn't make any sense.
Dubs are good, when they are done well (which, a lot of newer anime do the dubs well, Cowboy Bebop is good, Ghost in the Shell is also well done too).

^Another dubbed anime I've like (or rather, am liking, since I haven't seen all of it yet) is Berserk (which is another good anime, imho). As I haven't seen the subbed version of Berserk, I can't really compare it to the dubbed, but I think that the dubbing is good so far because none of the voice acting has yet annoyed me or made me roll my eyes.

Yeah, that part of the movie was the second most fucked up scene (the first most fucked up being the visit in Instrumentality and the very end of the movie). Asuka was really kicking the shit out of the Eva series, then...well, I won't spoil it for the rest of t-dub, but she definitely dies a pretty bad death.
Actually, I have EoE on my computer and, for a while, I had to keep watching that fight scene over and over again for it all to sink in.

oh youre right, noone made me read everything on wikipedia. but i did lol. i actually think i know what happens in that fight, but ill wait and ask you later.
actually i read the transcripts for the last few episodes of FMA a few months back. i have a bad habit of doing that. i have about 40 inuyasha episodes that i havent watched because im afraid to spoil it before they even air on tv. 3/12/2006 6:40:58 PM |

Truth be told, I too read the spoilers for Evangelion. I was watching it through JAMS, and I wanted to know what would happen in the episodes for next week. One thing led to another and, before I could stop myself, I had read the transcripts for EoE as well. After that I'd been reading entire essays written on the movie and series, trying to get people's opinions and thoughts about the various meanings of the show. 3/12/2006 6:45:53 PM |

The only thing about the "your mother's soul must be in the Eva unit in order for it to function" explanation is, who was in Rei's unit? Or how about Touji's unit, wasn't Unit 03 from America? 3/12/2006 6:58:59 PM |

I've never heard the "mother's soul in the eva" theory before, but it doesn't make sense to me that it would be that way either. Wasn't Rei in one of the episodes assigned to pilot Shinji's eva, when Shinji didn't want to?
I think it has more to do with the pilot having to have an "incomplete soul." Shinji, for example, never had his mom or dad around, and it has always bugged him, Asuka's mom killed herself in a bad way and screwed Asuka up, Rei wasn't even fully human, and Toji's sister was terminally ill. 3/13/2006 2:55:23 AM |

i hear you bro, but go read wikipedia.
Quote : | "The Evas have the outward appearance of massive humanoid robots and can apparently be piloted only by children conceived after the Second Impact. Pilots are selected by the Marduk Institute, which is later discovered to be composed of about 108 ghost companies, (108 is the number of sins in Japanese Buddhism, and the number of beads on a typical Buddhist rosary/mala) but Gendou Ikari and Ritsuko Akagi are actually in charge of selecting pilots. It is frequently speculated that qualifying pilots must have lost a mother, whose soul is used as the soul of the Eva. The Evas also appear to behave under the influence of the soul inside it. One example is when Unit 01 goes "berserk," acts without control of its pilot or NERV and refuses to shut down (or in one instance, to start without Shinji). Unit 00 goes berserk and lashes out at the tormentors of Ritsuko Akagi's mother, apparently attempting to kill Rei. Though unit 02 does not ever go truly berserk, Asuka says in "The End of Evangelion" that she feels the presence of her mother protecting her in the Eva. Each Eva has its own designated pilot, due to the bond between the pilot's soul and the soul of the Eva; otherwise, any other person who tries to synchronize (simply put, to technically work as one mind) with the Eva is more likely to be refused. That is not to say that it is impossible to synchronize in such a situation, as is shown in an experiment in Episode 14, in which Rei and Shinji synchronize with each others' Evas." |

shinji's mother
Quote : | "Yui served as the test subject for the Contact Experiment of EVA-01 in 2004, saying that "everything happens as it must." She invited her son Shinji to GEHIRN to watch what would be her final moments: Yui "disappeared" during testing — leaving no body behind — and was proclaimed dead that same year after efforts to recover her failed. Although GEHIRN considered it an accident, it is clear that what happened was Yui's intention. Living on within the Eva, she continues to ensure a "bright future" for Shinji and the rest of humanity, seeing to it personally that SEELE's scenario is never entirely fulfilled." |
asukas mother
Quote : | "Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu (??·????·?????? Soryu Kyoko Tsepperin), Asuka's mother, was a key scientist in the German division of Gehirn (what would later become NERV's Third Branch) and the development of EVA-02, the first Production Type (the second and third of which were later produced by the two American branches of NERV). After participating in EVA-02's Contact Experiment, she became mentally unstable and was admitted to a mental institution. Her husband entered an affair with Kyoko's own doctor, which eventually prompted Kyoko's suicide in 2005; and by the time of Kyoko's funeral, the doctor had already become Asuka's stepmother.
Kyoko's soul seems to have become trapped in EVA-02 as a result of the experiment, although how her body remained intact afterwards is a well-disputed mystery. Many speculate that her losing her soul during the Gehirn experiments is the reason for her mental instability." |
