from some of you anyway (most of you probably know who you are)...

What do you consider to be the largest problems facing humanity right now?

That's not to be read as the biggest problems facing America, Industrialized Nations, or any other sample of humans. I mean the biggest problems facing humanity.

If you're having trouble, think of it this way: If you were suddenly in charge of everything everywhere in the world, show me your prioritized list of the issues you'd address first.

You really shouldn't have to be in charge of the world to make that happen.

Normally, I'd say hunger would be the biggest one, however, given the events with Iran the nuclear issue has me a bit on edge.

Socialism and religious extremism (of all religions including Christianity).

If I were in charge things I would do:

1)Outlaw organized religion (if anyone can think of any better way to crush the religious zealotry, have at it)
2)Abolish all social welfare programs
3)Do away with all regulations of businesses
4)Do away with all nuclear weapons
5)Do away with all regulations of drugs (everything would be legal:marijuana, LCD, heroin, cocaine, etc.)
6)Implement a flat tax of 5% on people's incomes to pay for basic government functions.

These are my top priorities.

So, do you mean that the existence of nuclear weapons is one of the largest problems facing humanity right now?

I'm not baiting for an argument, btw. Just trying to clarify.

Also, please list others if you feel there are other issues of similar importance that should be addressed.

My primary concern is the decline in popularity of Pokemon.

Also, the fact that people are killing people, people are dying, and people lead shitty lives. I don't know that those things will ever change.

if those are proto's top 5 priorities for saving humanity im a bit worried. theres a lot more wrong with the world than ppl not being able to smoke crack or paying taxes for welfare moms.

i agree with extremism in general, but there is no magical way to solve that

so heres my list of the problems (depending how you wanna look at it, choose 1 or 2):
1) humanity itself
2) what we have become

Try #1 and a lot of people will raise an army up against you.
Everything else would be very do-able, all you would have to do is pass an amendment to the constitution stating "everything in this constitution shall be taken LITERALLY"
The flat tax would be harder, but unnecessary. As government spending collapsed (nothing constitutional to spend it on) they would lower taxes enough to make it no longer matter whether it was flat or progressive.

Most serious threats:

1) Autocracy/despotism/dictatorship. Virtually every famine and not-so-virtually every genocide in recent years can be attributed directly to these factors.
2) Ethnic/religious hatred. They fuel modern autocracy and all of its evils, and are responsible for many if not most current global conflicts. The way to solve this is not to try to abolish the differences between people. It is to educate, and shoot anyone who doesn't respond well to education. More or less.
3) Oversized nuclear arsenals. I don't think you can leave the only thing capable of completely anihilating humanity off the list of things that threaten it.
4) AIDS. Not disease in general, just that one. It won't wipe out mankind, but it may well wipe out huge chunks of it.

^^ With the exception of number 3 and the jist of number 4 (make it disease in general, not just AIDS) then all elements of your list are universal to every century.

Overpopulation is not a problem in the world today. Population distribution, maybe, but not numbers overall.

There is no other disease that holds a candle to AIDS in terms of the threat it poses. If you expect me to put the goddamn avian flu (which I notice still isn't killing everybody like some of you promised) on the same level as the scourge that's killing half the population or more in some countries, you've got another thing coming.

Malaria has killed more people than AIDS. Sure, AIDS is on a fast-growing upward trend, but so is malaria as DDT use has been eliminated and the economic situation in some African countries gets even worse.

1) Is that in recent years, or aggregate?
2) The big wave of AIDS deaths may well not have started yet.
3) Malaria is regional. AIDS goes wherever there are people.

he said problems facing humanity, not "things that i personally dont like". how the hell are things like this going to destroy humanity (well, save for a Islamic extremsit getting ahold of a nuke)

hunger would probably top my list, followed by disease

this is the biggest current threat to first-world nations that don't have to worry about hunger, etc.

ps Socialism leads to hunger and disease via the poverty and substandard health care systems.

I'd say hunger, because it's easy to fix. There's enough grain being produced RIGHT NOW to feed everyone in the world 3500 calories a day. When you factor in other foods, there's enough food for everyone with plenty leftover. Ending misdirected food aid and such would make that easy to fix.

Completely ending the use of fossil fuels

end the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, period. we have more food than we need now, and without these, we'd have either enough or almost enough.

failing these, destroy all humans

nevermind the fact western Europe, Canada, and cuba has some of the best healthcare in the world.

Stupidity and addiction.

True, many people bring it upon themselves, but these are problems intelligent design, natural selection, and social darwinism have yet to solve. Stupid social programs...
