I was impressed...but, of course, I had low, low expectations (having seen Kaine stump a few times in VA). He did a great job protecting himself from criticism from the VA GOP by shrouding the entire response in a cloak of bipartisanship.

I don't think he offered any new insights, but then again, I don't think Bush offered anything new either.

that's the point. you see everything as a catholic and not a constituent. Do you realize that when she was elected she was very clear that she respected Roe v. Wade and people tried to make an issue out of it and failed. Furthermore, louisiana elections are different than most places. They don't have the republican winner going against the democratic winner. It's a hodge podge.

I understand that, however look at the significance that faith plays in their election processes. Landrieu was running way ahead in the polls, and then the Archbishop of New Orleans declared that it would be a sin to vote for her - and her numbers PLUMMETED that instant.

To be perfectly honest, racism is the whole reason that Landrieu is there in the first place - there are some parts of Louisiana that are quite racist and would never vote for a black man, period.

Landrieu only won at the last second because of a flood of votes coming her way from a certain ward in New Orleans. That ward has been destroyed; it does not exist above water anymore.

Maybe they should not be targeted. Nevertheless, the Church never endorses candidates. It simply says what the moral teaching of the Church is on issues.

I thought Tim Kaine did a good job with his speech. He didn't share much in the way of new ideas, but overall, I thought he made an effective case for change in a simple, relatable tone. In a lot of ways, I think he outbushed Bush...

I think the people of the State of Louisiana have more issues to worry about than how their Senator votes in a judicial nominee. But if you'd like to persist with this rationale, allow me to retort (© Jules Winnfield in "Pulp Fiction").

Right now, Sen. Landrieu is sitting on 56-percent approval rating...which has been steadily increasing since last May. She's right in the middle of the pack in the Senate and is tied with George Allen (R-VA)...who, I think everyone agrees, is pretty secure in his re-election bid.

But, more to the point...Landrieu is a member of the Gang of 14, voted in favor of the Roberts nomination (another Catholic) and spoke out against the fillibuster attempt from members of her own party. I think she's insulated herself well against any such charges.

Oh, and if I think that if you research voting records on judicial nominees, you'll note that other LA senators (*ahem* John Breaux) supported pro-choice and pro-life candidates.

John Breaux is one Senator, not Senators. However, he was greatly pro life, whereas Excommunicant Landrieu is not.

I was making one specific reference, but I'm relatively sure the same standard Breaux employed has been consistent among Louisiana's Senate delegation.
