i've read via a brief internet search that one can fly directly in, take a ferry from Bari, bus from Zagreb, etc.
whats the quickest/cheapest way to get there, or how did you get there? 2/2/2006 2:30:56 PM |

we drove in from southern austria through slovenia. probably not the quickest. your best prices will probably be fly in to zagreb and then take the bus or train. where i was in istria wasn't more than like 100 miles from zagreb i believe. 2/2/2006 2:56:56 PM |

no too much. do know that its coast supposedly has some of the best scuba diving in the area. and the city has this big festival in summer that is supposed to be awesome. very old city with lots of historical buildings and whatnot. 2/2/2006 3:27:04 PM |

i was planning on going there a couple weeks ago but ran out of time
was going to take a ferry from Ancona, Italy to Debruvnik, then a train over to Split, then back to Ancona by ferry. 2/2/2006 3:50:30 PM |

I've been there many times over the years. When I was living in Bosnia working at the embassy, we used to spend most nice weekends down on the Croatian coast. Dubrovnik is absolutely gorgeous and I would highly recommend it. Cortula and Makarska are also a lot of fun. Split isn't all that great, its basically a port city. You can easily fly into Zagreb or Split or even take a ferry over from Italy as has been mentioned. If you are interested in doing the whole thing on the cheap, consider staying in Neum, Bosnia. Bosnia only has ~20km of coastline that divides croatia and this is Neum. It is far cheaper in Bosnia and Neum is nearly 100% croat so you'll hardly realize that you are not in croatia (from town you can actually see the border crossings on both sides).
I actually hope to get down there to visit friends in Bosnia and relax in Croatia at the end of march after I finish work in Belarus. 2/2/2006 4:59:03 PM |

^ Yes it is becoming much more well known these days, but it is still a bit cheaper that other european coastal destinations. Lots of places to choose from depending on how you want to spend your time. 2/3/2006 3:48:24 AM |

it's next on my list of places to visit
a friend went there a few years ago and she flew into Italy and then took the train, said it was a bit cheaper for her at the time. But she may have gotten some deal/package where it worked out that way. 2/3/2006 12:35:45 PM |

I went this past summer and stayed in Krk, which is a small island on the coast of Croatia. It was the most beautiful place I've ever been. It was remarkably cheap, the food was great and the locals english was better than many Americans. We went hiking a lot and also just rented chairs and a umbrella on the beach for something like $5 for the whole day and drank cheap delicious croatian beer (Pivo) followed w/ awesome traditional croatian seafood dinners. 3/7/2006 8:02:50 PM |
