Apparantly....

If anybody knows a scouting report on San Diego's quarterbacks, it's new Jets assistant Brian Schottenheimer. The Jets need a quarterback, and have the draft's fourth overall pick as ammunition -- the exact spot in which Philip Rivers was selected. San Diego would prefer not to trade either Rivers or Drew Brees, but if it had to part with one, the Chargers might prefer to deal Brees..

i have heard rumors that Brees's injury is bad, and the chargers are not sure how effective he will be next year, or in the future...until the injury, i think P-Riv was gone!

I really, really hope Phil or Brees gets traded, but unfortunately I don't see it happening. I think SD should trade Rivers for either a high draft pick or a decent backup QB and lower draft picks that way they still have an insurance policy if Brees doesn't make it back.

Or hopefully Brees won't recover well and Phil will take over without any worry about Brees coming back.

^They could get a 1st-round pick for either one of them. So why keep both? Get a 1st rounder in return, lose all the 2-QB drama, and use the pick to draft what they really need: A WIDE RECEIVER to go with LT and Gates and whoever they keep as QB.

^^ McCardell is not a bad receiver, but he is more of a possession guy than a #1. They definitely need another guy to replace either Eric Parker or Reche Caldwell in the starting lineup.

^^^They could not get a #1 for either of them. They've tried & it's not happening. With Brees' shoulder concerns, a team would be crazy to give up a #1 for him. And no one knows what to think about Rivers. The only way a team would give up a #1 for Rivers is if it was a conditional future pick, based on how much Rivers plays next season, which of course may or may not end up being a #1.

I dont know exactly how bad his is, but mine was pretty bad and i just had the same surgery at the end of Dec. and my shoulder is doing great, so i would assume he would be ready for camp.

^^ well they have Jammer at cornerback, Drayton Florence isn't that bad either

McCardell is like 59 years old now; Caldwell, Parker, and Os(not that)good can barely be considered serviceable. that dude Vincent Jackson from Northern Colorado or wherever MIGHT be good if he can ever see the field.

I'd say WR is a slightly higher priority than CB

JETS AND CHARGERS TO ANNOUNCE BLOCKBUSTER
DE-Abraham To San Diego - QB-Rivers To New York

The DinoCosta Show has learned through an exclusive source that the NY Jets & San Diego Chargers are set to make a Blockbuster trade.

The Chargers will send quarterback Philip Rivers, the 4th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft, to the Jets, in return for pass rushing defensive end John Abraham. Rivers has been stuck behind Chargers quarterback Drew Brees the last two seasons, and will be re-uniting with former Chargers asst. Brian Schottenheimer who was recently named the Jets offensive coordinator. Schottenheimer is planning to install an offensive system that is similar in design to the Chargers current system - a system that Rivers is comfortable in and familiar with. Abraham has been miffed that the Jets haven't given him a new contract after proving that he could play an entire 16 game schedule as he did last year. The Chargers will slide Abraham nicely into their 3-4 defense that will also feature Shawne Merriman, providing San Diego with a terrific twosome that will give the rest of the AFC West fits. This trade makes sense for both teams and makes the Chargers "quiet" signing of quarterback A.J. Feeley last season something that was apparently done with the long term in mind. A big question for the Jets is what will they do with current quarterback Chad Pennington...should he be successful in returning from major shoulder surgery for a second time.

I don't know anything about this guys credibility, but this rumor seems to be in a lot of places.

part of why this rocks is that the OC must have seen that Rivers can play with the big boys and has confidence in him to want to make a move like this. Its not some random guy in the league who is trading on "potential". Would be kinda sweet to basically have rivers head to head in NYC with eli.... and if anyone can handle the NY pressure, its rivers

I also saw the possibility of this trade in the works on the CNNSI rumors page, so hopefully it's right. But with P-Riv's luck so far, he'll get to the Jets and Pennington will comeback and be a Pro-Bowler. I just want P-Riv to have the chance to start somewhere and actually have a career. And that QB-Coach wanting Rivers shows me that he must see something in him, and I also like that.

Plus the Jets as of late have become a NC State haven, this would be another NC Stater up there. Rivers, Cotchery, and Maddox all together.

pennington already had a weak ass arm before his latest injury, so unless they replaced his arm with a robotic one, i dont see his arm strength getting any better

Not only that..but with Brian Schott. being the OC, there is gonna be a new offensive scheme, which Chad Pennington will need some time getting used too..that + the time to recover..I think if this works..we are looking at rivers starting....yeaaaaaaaaaa...that plus signing of a top 5 RB and some good DL's this april will make things look even better..Curtis Martin is done right?

im not sure how good abraham is, but the Jets wouldn't give up a "good" DE for a mere second string QB, would they?

if the rumor were true he should start eh?

Wait a sec....I said that joking, but would the Jets trade their current DE for the 99.9% chance to draft Mario Williams and not have to worry about drafting a QB?

I havent been keeping up with this stuff lately, but it sounds good to me.

This guy is retarded. Abraham would not fit into a 3-4 because he's too small to play end and too slow to play linebacker.

Do you think this rumor has much credibility? The site looks a little sketchy with the Rivers trade story overlapping the Kenyon Martin trade story. Having Rivers, Cotchery, A. Maddox, and Mario in New York would be great.

No credibility, for the reasons I stated.

The Chargers have zero interest in John Abraham.

Maddox might not be on the depth chart because he was placed on IR with a torn ACL at the beginning of the season.

And I've seen quite a few places that have speculated that SD was interested in Abraham and that if traded either Brees or Rivers would be the target for the trade, so I don't think you quite know what you're talking about when saying SD wasn't interested in Abraham.

It's been on multiple CNNSI "Truth & Rumors" pages throughout the off-season. Now it just says that the Chargers would be interested in Abraham if he would become a free-agent, last week it said they would be interested in trading for a QB, but I believe it said possibly Brees instead of Rivers, can't remember.
