what do you think about Sony VAIO FS630 for $899 + tax ?

spec:
VAIO FS630/W Notebook
Intel Pentium M Processor 740, 1.73GHz, with Centrino Technology, 512MB RAM, 80GB Hard Drive, 15.4-inch WXGA TFT Display, 8X DVD / 24X10X24 CD-RW Combo Drive, Windows XP Home

I 'm looking for notebook for typical schoolwork. Actually i like 12" screen coz' i mostly put in my backpack. But this price seems to be good deal for sony. Any VAIO user here? is it durable? i've been using dell laptop for 2 years, drop it twice, changing HD once, but i think it's worth the price

Thank you for your advice

I don't thin you'll find anyone on here that will recommend a VIAO.

i replaced my inspiron with a vaio this past summer, and do not regret it a bit I have the FS640W, and it does all I need it to do for a laptop, and it has the best screen that I looked it, that alone sold me on the system

There's plenty of people who have little use for a DVD burner.

I got a vaio for graduation, and I've never had or used a computer that compares. Most people that say they are overpriced or bad computers have never had one, or they just can't afford one. TWW tried to talk me out of a vaio, and I'm glad I didn't listen. They are excellent computers.

just get an external DVD burner if you need one later..
or buy a 2nd internal drive if you've got money to burn (usually much more exensive)

overall not a bad laptop,
yes sony > dell

if that isnt the standard response for overly expensive gear i dont know what is. you may like it, but since you didnt try the alternative you arent in much of a place to compare. theres plenty of other computers that have other perks (perhaps price) and work similarly well.

either way i agree about the dvd-burner being unnecessary. if you have a dvd/cd-rw thats more than most ppl need.

I really liked my VAIO until it stopped working.

I would buy another one over any other laptop if I could somehow be assured it wouldn't die. Otherwise, I'd buy an IBM.

Don't get anything with 512 megs of ram unless you wanna upgrade or have your comp run like ass, esp on a laptop. Boycott sony, they are fucking evil.

[Edited on February 4, 2006 at 5:10 PM. Reason : what part of typical schoolwork requires a gig or more of ram?]

512 is fine as long as you're just doing light content creation, web browsing, "vintage" gaming, and keep off the spyware.

So basically... no new games, no heavy adobe usage, no autocad, no trojans (lifstyles are cheaper anyways).
